UNC wins the final game of the series vs Maine

After suffering its first loss of the season #11 North Carolina (6-1) rebounds very well, beating Maine (1-5) by the final of 8 to 4 in the last of a three game series. While head coach Mike Fox probably wanted to sweep the Black Bears, knowing that his team can bounce back well from a loss might be some sort of relief. Having said that, it was Maine that took the lead in this one right off the bat, something that seems to be the trademark for the Diamond Heels this season: coming from behind. However, with the Heels getting 14 hits on offense while getting 15 K’s on defense made it so that UNC won its sixth game of the young season. From the official web site I saw that Maine was able to come back on UNC and tie it up at three a piece until the Heels took the lead for good.

On the mound it was RS Junior Colin Bates (2-0) for the first 5.0 IP and got the win as he gave up 3 ER on three hits, two walks and striking seven. Sophomore righty Jimmy Messer pitches 1.1 innings, who gave up a run (earned) on two hits, a walk and getting 3 K’s. Finally it was frosh Michael Morin, who goes for 2.2 giving up no runs on a hit and striking out five, got the save. Five Tar Heels had multiple hits, including three by freshman right fielder Brian Goodwin. While it was seven different hitters getting an RBI in this game, while seven Heels scored, with only junior left fielder Ben Bunting score twice. One thing that really showed up on the score box was Carolina no errors, Maine three.

For this squad it’s next game is against Gardner-Webb tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. EST at Boshamer Stadium. This game was supposed to be played on Tuesday, but due to unforseen problems it was moved to Thursday.
