Now that the John Wall soap opera or saga or whatever else you want to call it let’s refocus on things to do with North Carolina. Head coach Roy Williams and his much different team will be starting their title defense on November 9th, when Carolina will face off against Alcorn State in the first round of the Coaches vs Cancer Classic. This won’t be the first time you will be able to see the Heels in action, as the team will play two exhibition games before starting the season. When you think about it, there is so much time between now and that game, ten days less than five months to be exact, and yet most of the fans want to see this team play. Some because we live in a society of here and now and can not enjoy the fact that we just won a title and some others because we want to see how well we can replace the four players that are headed to the NBA.
I for one am going to enjoy the off season, while I will report on any and all things to do with the team, I want to live this time as a national champion, because that who we are, and should not take it for granted for one second. Next year there will be bumps in the road, many more than this year I believe, but it will be great to watch a group of players once again gel together in order to become a great team. We might not be the best in the country as far as point guard or back court, but we are going to be as good as anyone in the country as far as front court. The combination of returning players (Deon Thompson, Ed Davis and Tyler Zeller) and the group of incoming freshmen (John Henson & Wear twins) is going to be a lot of fun to watch. Add the fact that you will have a proven leader in Marcus Ginyard and you know that this team is going to be once again fighting to win the ACC regular season and will make a statement in the NCAA.
So, enjoy the summer, check out the Diamond Heels as they once again try to head to the College World Series, begin to check out the football team as head coach Butch Davis has them going in the right direction and do not worry about the men’s basketball team for now, they will be just fine. Let’s remember, we do have a Hall of Famer head coach in Roy Williams and a heck of coaching staff around him. As I say all the time, strap yourself in, it might be a bit bumpy, but it’s going to be a heck of a ride that we will all enjoy.
