After top ranked North Carolina (1-0-0) took care of UNC Asheville (0-1-0) a couple of days back by the score of 5-0, thanks in part to sophomore midfielder Kirk Urso, the Heels will now host the Carolina Nike Classic. You can check out the four teams playing in the tournament here. But first thing first, and let’s look at the shut out first. And when you see the box score you will see how the Tar Heels were dominant not just in the scoring, but in most everything.
Besides Urso the other three scorers on the night were sophomore fwd/middi Alex Dixon, freshman forward Enzo Martinez and junior middi Dustin McCarty. On the defensive side, senior keeper Brooks Haggerty got his seventh career shutout, showing that head coach Elmar Bolowich’s squad is strong on both side of the ball. As you will see when you check out the play by play (scroll down some for the play by play) you will see that UNC only scored once in the first 45 minutes. As a matter of fact this game, which finished as a wipe out, was still close until the last part of the second half, when the Heels scored three goals as the game was in the last ten minutes.
Check out the recap of the goals below:
As far as the Nike Classic Tournament the other three teams are: UNC Greensboro (0-0-0), Evansville (0-1-0) and Northern Illinois (0-1-0). And I will make the not so much bold prediction that UNC should come out of this with two wins and keep their top ranking. The action begins today for all the four teams, with Carolina facing off against Northern Illinois at 7:30 p.m. EST as the second game. The first is UNC Greensboro versus Evansville at 5:00 p.m. After a day off tomorrow the tournament wraps up Sunday afternoon, starting at 1:00 p.m. The admission, just like the tournament last week, is free of charge!
Come back tonight/tomorrow for the small recap of the game between the UNC and N. Illinois, which will be the first match between the two programs.
