Today was the Atlantic Coast Conference’s annual Basketball Media Day. The media voted on how they see the standings for the 2009-10 season. No surprise that North Carolina is one of the top teams, or that Duke would be one as well, maybe the only surprise is that the two programs got the same amount of votes. To be said that the Blue Devils did beat out the Tar Heels in first place votes, 25 to 20. Two other teams got first place votes: Georgia Tech (2) and Wake Forest (1). Actually it is pretty glaring how the media see the two teams above everyone else, as they got 545 points, while Clemson (who came in third) got 409. And while two of the three schools that make the triangle are on top of the polls, the third one, N.C. State, is on the other side of the spectrum, coming in last out of the twelve teams. Is this more pressure for the young (and very talented) Carolina team, or is this going to be extra motivation for them? Only time will tell, but for now here is the list…
T1. Duke (25) 545
T1. UNC (20) 545
3. Clemson 409
4. Georgia Tech (2) 387
5. Maryland 378
6. Wake Forest (1) 315
7. Florida State 314
8. Virginia Tech 273
9. Boston College 251
10. Miami 135
11. Virginia 116
12. N.C. State 76
My opinion on the list? Well, I think the media got it right at the top, since I do see a run for the title between UNC and Duke. I also think the reporters/writers got it right when it comes to the bottom, since I think that both the Cavs and the Wolfpack are going to be pretty bad. In the middle I think it’s going to be a free for all with a lot of road games going to the home team more than the better team. I also believe this season is going to be another great one to watch North Carolina, and while they might have their bumps in the road (they had them last season) I believe that by the time the ACC part of the schedule comes around they will all have gelled and be ready for the competition.
