While, due to time for other (RL) things I could not follow the Women’s Professional Soccer League (WPS). But I do want to do this post, even if a bit late, about the fact that a quartet of former Lady Heels were a crucial part in getting Sky Blue FC the first ever league title. The four, which is the most that any WPS team, are: Heather O’Reilly, Kacey White, Jenni Branam and Yael Averbuch. In all the league has twelve players from Chapel Hill, the most of any college. Four of them will be back at UNC to finish up their college courses and help out head coach Anson Dorrance and the top ranked Heels.
In the finals, which was a long road for Sky Blue FC as they were the last team to make the playoffs, it was Heather O`Reilly getting the MVP for the game as she scored the only goal in the 90 minutes versus the Los Angeles Sol. You can check out the boxscore of the game as well, but what I want to focus on here is the need that this league go on, especially for a college like North Carolina. Let’s be realistic here, this program is like the Carolina Men’s Basketball program, where coach Dorrance can show how many of his players are pro he is going to bring in even more players than he has in the past.
Just think about this, the Lady Heels are ranked first in the country, with a chance of having a couple more going into the WPS once the draft is done. And like that every year, you know that the only thing that this will do is to give even more spot light on a program that has already 19 national titles under its belt. Yes, it’s great that Sky Blue FC won with four Tar Heels on it, but in my opinion having the WPS is the biggest win of all for North Carolina. The second victory is that you have four players coming back, finishing their degree and helping out their team (and of course talking about what could possibly be their “next step”).
