From the official web site of North Carolina Athletics comes news that ESPN has announced the first round match ups for the 2010 Puerto Rico Tip Off. Carolina will face off Hofstra in its opening game, which will be held on November 18th. Of the dozen games from this tournament the World Leader in Sports will televise nine of them, either on ESPN2 or ESPNU. The other three games in the first round are: Davidson versus West Virginia, Nebraska and Vanderbilt and Western Kentucky against Minnesota. The field consists of two teams that played in the NCAA’s last year (WVU and Vandy), with the Mountaineers reaching the Final Four. The finals of the tournament will be held on November 21 and televised on ESPN2.
I have always thought that going to pre-season tournaments helps tremendously with the gelling of the team, and kidding aside, this team needs to gel a lot better and quicker than it did last season. They are games that the team wants to win but does not have as much pressure as the out of conference games against big time programs or the ACC part of the schedule. It is a chance to see who can play with who and switch it around as much as you want while being able to give all some playing time. For us fans, who are waiting for this new crop of youngsters and for the rebound from last season, this will also be the first time where we will see how well this team can do in `10-`11.
