Paulus leaving UNC, but not going to SU

In a move that probaly a lot of people who follow the Tar Heel football team expected, word is, according to Scout’s Inside Carolina, that redshirt quarterback Mike Paulus is leaving the program and heading to William & Mary. For those of you that do not know or remember, Mike is the younger brother of Greg Paulus, ex Duke point guard turned ex Syracuse quarterback. Right now, without the incoming players for the 2010 season Paulus was third on the depth chart, with the arrival of Bryn Renner he would most likely be sliding down to fourth. The move to William & Mary, which is a IAA program, makes sense as Mike won’t have to sit out one year and will have two full seasons to compete for the starting spot. The move to leave now also makes sense as he can compete in Spring Ball and pick up the offense before the summer practices. If you look at the schedule for next season Carolina will be facing William & Mary, which would mean that Paulus might be facing the UNC D, but this time not in practice.

I love the tidbit about William & Mary from the Tar Heel Fan, when he says that Mike Paulus is transfering to a squad that has beaten Virginia more times than North Carolina has in the past three years.

Having watched both of the Paulus’ brothers play in high school I have to say that the Greg to Duke move made me shake my head (I totally believe that a more stable Notre Dame program would have brought him there), while I was truly happy that Mike was coming to UNC. I always believed that the older brother might have had a better game in football, but Mike wasn’t bad at all and truly thought that with the right coaching he could have been an above average college QB. For whatever reason that didn’t happen and in the end his three years at Carolina were nothing more but a couple of games worth of action that left you wondering if you were watching a diamond in the rough or just a confused played that was in way over his head.

As I do with all Tar Heels I wish Mike Paulus the best of luck at William & Mary. I also hope that the two remaining quarterback for head coach Butch Davis do not get hurt in the Meineke Car Care Bowl or UNC is going to be in a world of trouble.
