One at Carmichael? Maybe…

One of the many great Tar Heel writers/tweeters, R.L. Bynum, owner of the site called Running Tar Heel, tweeted yesterday the url to a post that was entitled “NIT game in Carmichael?” I have to say that for this old Heel, who remembers the days of playing in that venue, reading the title alone made my day. Reading the first paragraph of his post made me smile even more, because the post was not just a theory of his, but it could be reality due to what is happening at the Dean Dome:

Because of renovations that are supposed to be made at the Smith Center, I’m hearing that Carolina athletics officials have decided to play any NIT home games in Carmichael, although nothing has been announced.

Granted that the phrase has a lot of positives in it, the ending brings you back to earth a bit, as the reality that nothing has yet been decided can make anyone draw many conclusions. One of them being that the officials are trying to find a way to squeeze in the game(s) at the Dean Dome and get the renovations done as well. Selfishly I have to say that I would love to see the game(s) at the old court for many reasons, one of them being that the Seniors have been sent off from their home court and going back to it would take a lot out of that special night for them. The second biggest reason I would like the game at Carmichael is the fact that this is in fact the 100th year anniversary of North Carolina basketball and that venue was part of that century. What a way to show the younger fan base part of history.

Reading another great UNC site, Tar Heel Fan, it has a link to nit-ology has North Carolina as a six seed, which means they would not be hosting a game in the post season. Of course with still some basketball to be played, the fact that the NIT also considers the better venues for the TV coverage, seeing the Heels move up to a four seed (who would host the first round game) doesn’t seem that far fetched in my opinion. As usual only time will tell, and many things still have to come together in order for this to happen, but as an old Heel and a blogger I can dream, can’t I?
