NCAA looking to change a couple of rules

It’s not a story about North Carolina itself, but it is definitely a story that will effect both the Tar Heels and all the other programs in college basketball, so I thought I would link to it. From an article I found on ESPN it seems that the NCAA is going to try and establish a rule that will effect the game, and in a good way, or at least I believe it will be in a good way. After having met from Monday to Wednesday this week, the NCAA’s Men’s and Women’s Basketball Rules Committee is sending a recommendation for the men’s game to the Playing Rules Oversight Panel to place this rule in the game:

The recommendation on play under the basket won’t call for a restricted-area arc painted in the lane as the NBA has, but it prohibits a secondary defender from establishing position in the area from the front of the rim to the front of the backboard. A defender must establish position outside that area to draw a charge or player-control foul.

The Oversight Panel, who is going to meet by conference call on June 3rd, will also look at this new proposal as far as taking free throws for someone that is injured:

In the proposal of substituting for a free throw shooter who has been injured, the opposing coach would choose the player to attempt the free throws from the four remaining players on the court.

I think that both these rule changes make sense, and will help make the game better (as far as the first one goes) and fairer (as far as the second one is concerned). In the end, making the game better is what it should be all about, and this time the committee seems to be doing just that. I will make sure to see if the panel passes or not these two recommendations and then update this post. Until then we can only hope that the NCAA gets one right every once in a while!
