Marvin Williams re-signs with the Hawks

Heels in the League (NBA)In this small post there is another good piece of news for an ex Tar Heel. After hearing about Carter, Wallace and May it’s now Marvin Williams’ turn. From what I have read (thanks to the PeachTree blog, who sent me the message on Twitter) it seems that the ex pupil of Roy Williams has gotten a very hefty deal with the Atlanta Hawks. From the reports that are out there the national champion from Chapel Hill is going to get a five year deal worth fourty million dollars. But, while this is good news, I love to understand something about Marvin Williams and his career in the National Basketball Association.

Marvin Williams

Marvin Williams

As we all remember he was the second pick of the 2005 NBA Draft, going ahead of someone named Chris Paul. And while there is no comparison between the two players and their respective careers as of right now, I find it  very hard to understand how a player like Williams (13.9 ppg ~ 6.9 rpg) drew almost no interest from around the league as an unrestricted free agent (identifies a player that can sign an offer sheet that can be matched by his current team). Marvin Williams might not become the face of the NBA, but I have to believe that he could definitely be in the starting five of many teams in the Association. And yet, when he inked the contract with his Hawks he did it knowing that there wasn’t much out there for him to look at beside that contract.

As I do with each and every Tar Heel, let me wish Marvin Williams all the best now that he is set with a long term contract. I am hoping that with this behind him and knowing that the team that drafted him is now going to keep him Williams will focus on the court and become the player that a lot thought he would/could be in the pro’s. As more details come out I will make sure to post them here on The Fifth Corner.
