Between the fact that a lot of things in real life got in the way, the fact that I changed over to a new page in the months right before the baseball/softball/lacrosse seasons and the fact that I just could not get in track to follow them, this year the spring secondary sports that I love and follow were just not taken care of. And it’s a shame, because this year, with a new head coach and a new mentality the men’s lacrosse team did pretty well, even if the finished the season by losing to Duke (for the third time this season) in the NCAA Tournament. Actually, the reality of the matter is that the whole ACC did well this season, and while the final was a match up of two upstate New York schools (Syracuse and Cornell), the four squads that make up the Atlantic Coast Conference all finished in the Top 10 in the season’s last ranking of the Nike/Inside Lacross Media Poll (voted by lax media from across the country).
And if you do follow the sport, you know things are looking up for head coach Joe Breschi and the lacrosse squad, as the incoming class for this year is composed of 13 players. You can read the breakdown of each player joining the team in August of 2009 by going to the official site of UNC Athletics. One of these young men, Grist Burns (5’11″/170 lbs. attackman), is from Chapel Hill, and I have always loved to see the player from the town come to UNC, because in my opinion bringing in players from close by is also a good way of bringing in as many people to come see the team play. Three of the players are from the state of New York, and I can say I saw all three of them play. So, for me, next year seeing the team play will mean seeing players I know from high school, and that is just one more reason to truly follow this team as best as I can.
Of the 13 players three of them will be playing in the All-American game. The players are: midfielder Ian Braddish of West Islip, (N.Y.) High School and attackman Marcus Holman and midfielder Greg McBride, both of whom play for The Gilman School in Baltimore, Md. The game will be played on June 27, 2009 and will be televised by ESPNU.
For now all I can say is congratulations on a good season and best wishes for the upcoming one to this that seems to be putting all the right pieces in the right places.
