Lawson talks, but I am not sure of what he said

Ty Lawson #5 JerseyI had seen this article from the Denver Post when it first came out, but due to the family situation I was not blogging for a while, and so I am getting to it right now. If you are not interested in reading the whole thing, the reason to why it is relevant to the Tar Heel fan base it’s because ex Heel point guard Ty Lawson said that “After my freshman year, I really should have left,”. Lawson went on to say that had he made the jump he would have learned a lot more, but also stated that he learned a lot under head coach Roy Williams. While everyone that does follow Carolina basketball knows that Lawson was going to go the NBA as soon as he could manage it, the reality is another. The Buzz, when Lawson did decide to return, be it that he might not have been ready for the pro’s, or that the NBA might not have been ready for him, or the summer incident for drinking underage and driving. or whatever else it might be, when the junior point guard did make his decision he did it putting the National Basketball Association on hold and playing for the University of North Carolina in trying (and achieving) to get a National Championship.

  • First point, which was made by another blog, The Buzz, when Lawson did decide to return, be it that he might not have been ready for the pro’s, or that the NBA might not have been ready for him, or the summer incident for drinking underage and driving. or whatever else it might be, when the junior point guard did make his decision he did it putting the National Basketball Association on hold and playing for the University of North Carolina in trying (and achieving) to get a National Championship.
  • Second point, one that might just hurt to hear, is that as fans the passion we have for our team is a lot more (sometimes) than what the players have. Do not get me wrong, I am not saying players are not playing all out, what I am saying is that we wish all them stay as long as possible, while they might be thinking to stay as little as possible and heading to their pro careers. And this is not just about Carolina, it’s every single program. With the failure of the “one and done” rule the programs now do not just fight one another for the top prospects, but will also have to deal with the reality that these talented kids could go to Europe to do their one year.
  • Last point. I know this might be a bit homer, but I think that what Ty Lawson wanted to say was not the same as what he actually said. Or maybe he wanted to say it, but when the words came out it made it sound a lot more harsher than what they were meant to be.

In the end, all I can say is this, whether or not Lawson wanted to go pro as soon as possible is certain, but the past season also showed what he did when he got hurt and what he did to get back into the mix of things to lead (yes, lead) Carolina to a National Title was the true sign of a leader. One that was just about the NBA might just have not risked the comeback that could have made him look bad and dropped him in the draft boards. Will we ever know what Lawson wanted to say? Maybe, maybe not, but does it matter? Not really, what matters is that we, as UNC fans, were fortunate to have him running the show for the squad. As I do with all Tar Heels, let me wish all the best to Lawson as he gets ready to enter his first season in the NBA.
