Lawson finally getting some good hype

Ty Lawson

After so much negative buzz about the point guard from Chapel Hill I now find some good news to report on when it comes to Ty Lawson. At the world leader in sports I found two links about teams that are seriously considering the speedy floor general. The first one is the Daily News that entitles their blog post “Nets like Lawson“. Have to say that the title leaves very little to the imagination, and with New Jersey picking at 11 it would mean that Lawson would be a lottery pick, something that so many naysayers thought would not happen. Another online article, this one from The Star Ledger, talks more in depth about Lawson.

This is what the Nets’ general manager Kiki Vandeweghe said of the young man who led his squad to a national title last season:

“Lawson. . . he’s a guy you can see has played a lot of basketball, really knows how to play basketball”

From the sounds of it, if both Jonny Flynn (Syracuse) and Jrue Holiday (UCLA) are gone, Ty Lawson could easily be the name the New Jersey based team will call. A move that has been endorsed by both Devin Harris and Vince Carter. The key in my opinion is this, while the move is going to help the Nets, because having a guard like Lawson as a third option isn’t something that many NBA teams can say they have, will it be good for the point guard to be so far down the pecking order? Right now I would say no, but on the other hand if Lawson did show he can run the team the Nets might just be able to get rid of one of their other two pg’s and make some cap room for another veteran player. Of course this is all speculation, especially since Lawson is not the only player that the Nets are looking at, and it’s still uncertain that both Flynn and Holiday will be off the board by then.

I have also been hearing/reading (sorry can’t find the source) that Lawson is on the radar of another team from the northeast, the New York Knicks. But, once again, this would all if other players (Flynn mainly) are off the board before the team from Madison Square Garden would even think about making Ty Lawson has their first round pick (8th overall). But the fact that two team seem sold on the talents that the young man from Maryland has is sure a turn in the right direction, especially after having to report a couple of times the fact that a lot of teams were not sold on him. With the draft coming up June 25th, having good news is the best thing any player trying to make it in the pro’s can have.

In my humble (and non professional) opinion Lawson is headed to one of these two teams: the Pacers (13th) or 76ers (17th). Which means to me he will be either a late lottery pick or just outside of it. Being from Maryland playing in Philadelphia would be a good fit, while playing for the Philly fans might not be. In the end I have to believe that Lawson, just like the other three players from Chapel Hill, is just ready to hear his name, no matter who calls it. As one that has followed all of this I can see how stressful it has to be for all of the players doing this. A missed shot/pass/rebound must weigh so much on them that it might lead to another error and then another.

As always, all the best to Lawson (and the rest of the Heels) in both the draft and then with his new team.
