Lady Heels still top ranked

Let me recap the Women’s Soccer weekend, which was the Carolina Nike Classic. In the first game, thanks to a great performance by senior middi Tobin Heath, top ranked North Carolina beat Central Florida 4-0. This pushed UNC to a 2-0 record for the year, while UCF is now 1-1 thanks to the lopsided lost. As far as the game goes it seemed that when Heath was around the ball close to the opponent’s goal good things happened. The senior scored two goals overall, as well as an assist, meaning that she was part of three out of four scored for head coach Anson Dorrance’s team. The other two goal scorers in this game were both scored by sophomores forwards. In the first one it’s Courtney Jones (2nd of the year) and the last goal of the game was by Brittany Bartok (first of the season). UNC outshot UCF 18-5 and 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Heels are now 16-0-3 against the Knights. You can check out the full box score as well.

The second game for the top ranked team in the nation was played against another team from the state. Unlike the first game, it was defense that gave North Carolina (3-0) the victory over UNC Asheville (1-2) by the final score of 1-0. For those of us keeping track, this is the second shut out of the season for coach Dorrance’s squad, and the 2nd out of 3 games that the Lady Heels’ D kept the opposition scoreless. On the other hand, yes the game ended one nill, but the that is not because of few shots, as UNC took close to two dozens of them against UNC Asheville, but just senior middi Nikki Washington‘s found the back of the net, which was a deflection of a shot/pass in the box. The goal was assisted by a pair of junior midfielders, Ali Hawkins and Meghan Klingenberg. In the box score you will see that the Lady Heels outshot the opponent 22 to 4, while corners went 10-3 for UNC.

The team will now play next on Friday as part of the St. Mary’s Soccer Classic in Notre Dame, Ind. In the first game the Heels will go up against the Fighting Irish (Friday at 7:30 p.m. EST) and then will play Marquette (Sunday at 11:00 a.m. EST). Make sure to check out the officialy web site for the recap, or mine (short version) on The Fifth Corner to see if the team come out of this tournament still undefeated and top ranked in the nation.
