While my last post, written this afternoon, on Tar Heel George Karl was about getting a contract extension, I have another one, and this one definitely not as good. The 58 year old head coach of the Denver Nuggets is expected to miss several games during the regular season as he undergoes chemo treatments to with a a recurrence of cancer an article on NBA.com says. The article goes on to say that Karl, who informed the team of the happenings, will not take a formal leave from the team as he battles what I believe is throat cancer, which have already started, but will miss games as he goes through this. This is the second battle for the Heel against cancer, being a prostate cancer survivor, something he went through in 2005.
“I’m probably going to miss a couple of games in the middle of March,” Karl said in a brief phone interview Tuesday. “And then come back, and then a game here and there… For me, not being a part of the team would be worse than being a part of the team and being out of it a little. My basketball family is my family, too.”
Let me wish all the best to George Karl as he goes through this ordeal. Those of you that follow this web site of mine or know me personally know that my wife is going through treatments to battle leukemia, so anytime I read about cancer/leukemia it always touches way too close for comfort.
