With the Hawks re-signing ex Tar Heel Marvin Williams I was able to procure an interview with one of the best bloggers when it comes to the Atlanta franchise, Drew from PeachTree Hoops (SB Nation blog). This can only mean that The Fifth Corner once again is proud to present another edition of “Interview With:”. I asked Drew, who I get my Hawks updates through Twitter, about what he thought of Marvin Williams staying in the Gate City of the South, what he thought of the price tag for him and finally I asked about the four new Tar Heels in the NBA and who he would have liked to see coming to Atlanta. So, without further ado, here is the interview…
A.E.M.: Hawks re-signing Marvin Williams, surprised or not?
Drew (PeachTreeHoops): Maybe only a little that it happened so quickly. The Atlanta paper was predicting long, drawn out negotiations. But without any real trade partner available, I never saw the Hawks letting go of Marvin, and because of that, I thought they would try and wrap him up before he became an unrestricted free agent next summer.
A.E.M.: What do you think of the contract itself, five years for fourty millions?
Drew (PTH): I….sort of like it. What the contract means is Marvin needs to get better. The good news is, he can. He has every year and Marvin’s worth ethic has never been questioned. If you could somehow “work on” a killer instinct, I would love the contract. In the end, I would have preferred 32-35 million, but I think it still might end up being a borderline bargain.
A.E.M.: I know I was pretty surprised that there wasn’t much buzz about him from other teams, were you?
Drew (PTH): A little. Part of it is that because of his overrated draft position, I think Marvin is a bit underrated now. I certainly think he is better and will continue to be better than say Trevor Ariza. However, being in Hawks pergatory for the first few years and having the Chris Paul cloud over him has tainted what a perfectly adequate starter he is.
I also think the Hawks were going to match anything reasonable, and that made a bunch of teams pass because they were not willing to make an unreasonable offer.
A.E.M.: Now that he is signed, how do you see the next five years of Williams’ career?
Drew (PTH): Most optimistic? A fringe all-star. Which is saying something for a small forward in this league. Marvin can play defense, hit the long 2, finish in transition, and his three point shot and little baby hook really came on last year. With a little aggression and a few post moves, hey watch out. Of course, we don’t live in a world of optimism; we live in a world of reality. So realistically, I see an above average starter.
A.E.M.: Lastly, being a blogger “in the know” of the pro game, of the four ex Tar Heels drafted this year who would you have wanted on the Hawks?
Drew (PTH): I wanted Ty Lawson. I admit it. It hurt my soul when Denver traded into the spot before the Hawks. I think Jeff Teague has more upside, but dang if Lawson would not have looked good in a Hawks uniform. With Lawson, the Hawks would have been fools to not run a very uptempo game, and that would have been fun to watch.
All that remains is to do is to thank Drew once again for his great answers, as well as to also mention that he got these questions back to me in lighting speed so I could post about this story when it’s still on the front burner. I also have to say that I can not disagree with anything he said, with the exception of the money, since I believe that even in a bad market Williams could have gotten a bit more.
Remember to check out Drew’s blog at PeachTree Hoops or on his Twitter Page. When the NBA is back in action and you want to know what is going on with the Hawks his blog is the place to get the news!
