What about you? Are you excited yet? Yes, I am asking this about the North Carolina football team, something that I haven’t been in way too long, and yes I am asking this while its just April. As I talked about in my podcast last night I am truly looking forward to this team playing in the 2010 season. Again, I am saying all of this as the pre-season is still such a long way away, and that is because I am excited about this squad and this program. I think that the defense will be talked about by any and all experts of the gridiron as being one of the best, not just in the Atlantic Coast Conference, in the whole nation. And the fan base knows it, and is rallying behind the team, as 30,000 fans filled Kenan Stadium for the Spring Game when they could have easily sat at home to watched it on ESPN. If there are any doubters that head coach Butch Davis and the rest of the coaching staff does not has this program on the right track I suggest to you to watch this team, because I am believer they are for real! All of this is coming from someone that has followed the football teams for over 3 decades, having been through the thick and thin. What makes me pretty sure about all of this is that UNC is going to have adefense that is not just good, it is also experienced. Head coach Butch Davis was not scared to start freshmen. Well those talented but raw frosh turned into sophomore, then juniors and now into seniors, ready to lead this squad.
Now, I know what some might say: “what about the offense?”. To that I am going to reply by saying that this defense is going to put the offense in a position that they won’t have pressure on them. In doing so that is going to take away a lot of problems for T.J. Yates (or whomever the quarterback might be). Yes, the offense also needs to find a way to get their running game going, taking away even more from the man under center, but in all, with most of the starters coming back with experience, hopefully with an offensive line that does not get so many injuries, the offense can easily do their job this year. Overall I think this is a year where both the offense and the defense could be as good as they have been in a long time at Chapel Hill, and that makes me excited about the season, as it should make you excited as well! Without a doubt someone on the offensive side of the ball needs to step up and be the team leader, because one is needed. But overall this could be the year that UNC goes back to having a 1,000 yard rusher, grinding out first downs, using the clock, because we are going to be playing many games ahead of the opponent and not behind in the scoring column.
So, this year, as we await “Late Night with Roy” let’s make sure to keep watching “In between the Lines with Butch”. I have a feeling that after the season opener against LSU in Atlanta a lot of the so-call experts will be buzzing about UNC as I see them winning the game and winning it big! So, yes I am excited about the upcoming season, I am excited about how coach Davis is shaping this program and how the future is very bring when it comes to the gridiron Heels. There is also one more thing I am awaiting when it comes to the football team, something that coach Davis, his staff or any of the players can control: the pre-season polls.
