Heels in the NBA Summer League 07/14/09

NBA Summer League (Las Vegas)

NBA Summer League (Las Vegas)

The National Basketball Association’s Summer League in Vegas is in full swing, which means that plenty of ex Tar Heels are going to be in action. Yesterday four ex Tar Heels (in three different teams) got to see the court for their squads, with half of them being starters and most contributing for their franchise. And as we all know by now, if there is a Tar Heel playing, the next day there will be a recap by yours truly talking about them, along with a link to the game itself. So, without further interruption, let’s check out what the quarter of ex Carolina players did in yesterday’s games.

New York Knicks

New York Knicks

In the first game with a touch of carolina blue it’s the New York Knicks versus the Memphis Grizzlies. For the Knicks we see David Noel on their roster. However, what you don’t see is the ex Tar Heel getting any playing time. The ex UNC player was one of five players that did not play last night, while ten players for the Knicks got anywhere from almost 12 minutes to close to 29. I say that because it just seems silly to bring 15 players if you are not going to play more than 10. As far as the game is concerned it’s Memphis winning the match, taking down New York 90 to 86. With the loss the New York Knicks fall to 0 and 1 in the League with four more games to play.

Cleveland Cavaliers

The next game is one with the duo of ex Tar Heels, Danny Green & Jawad Williams. That means that the Cleveland Cavaliers is playing, and this time its opponent is the Washington Wizards. For Green, who starts at one of the forward spots but only gets less than 17 minutes in all, was an so-so night, as the young man from Long Island scored just four points on 0 for 5 shooting (0 for 1 from beyond the arc) and making all four of his free throws. Green also got three rebounds and an assist, while committing two turnovers on the night. Meanwhile Jawad Williams, who came off the bench, played more (22 minutes), scoring 14 points, grabbing two boards, dishing out an assist and getting a steal. Williams also had 2 TO’s on the night. In the end it was Washington winning by a slim margin, as they defeated Cleveland 96 to 93.

Denver Nuggets

Denver Nuggets

The last game of the night has another ex Heel playing in their first Summer League game. It’s Ty Lawson, who started for his Denver Nuggets, who went against the San Antonio Spurs. In the game the speedy point guard did not have a great scoring night, as he went 0 for 7 from the field, but was a perfect 8 for 8 from the charity stripe. He also added three assists, a rebound and a steal. On the other hand, Lawson did have four turnovers, which I have to believe comes from the butterflies of playing the first game in the pro’s. In a tight game, it was San Antonio winning by a duece, defeating Denver by the final tally of 78 to 76.

    Noel with the Knicks? Interesting.

DNP – they alternate rosters, resting some guys to give them max minutes the next night. Getting a DNP in the summer league is good because the next game you’ll probably log big minutes.
