Heels in the League (NFL) Week Two (Part 1)

(NFL) Week Two

(NFL) Week Two

And here we are once again with the second week of the NFL and that means it is also time to do the weekly recap I call “Heels in the League” (NFL). Just like last week I will not do a major post, but do 2-3-4 posts with three games a piece. Also, make sure to click on all the links that I provide you with, since they will tell more about the game itself, while I just focus on the ex Carolina players. Now, without further ado, here is the first post about this week’s “Heels in the League” (NFL) and wait for the second part later this morning…

Denver Broncos

Denver Broncos

The first game I am going to look at is the one between the Cleveland Browns and the Denver Broncos (even), played in front of 73,931 fans at Invesco Field at Mile High. The visiting team doesn’t have any ex Tar Heels, but Denver does, two of them. The first one is Vonnie Holliday, a second string DE, who did not see any action (at least in the box score), while the other player, rookie TE Richard Quinn (3rd string), also didn’t see any plays come his way. In the end, while the two Carolina players might not have had any plays, the team won, as Denver beat Cleveland by three TDs, with the final score being 27 to 6. Over at the NFL Gridiron Gab Ian Leslie says Browns Run Over by Undefeated Broncos 27-6, while the Broncos’ blog at Fansided, Predominantly Orange, has two posts Just the Facts and Broncos Get Win #2 Against Browns about this week’s game. Over at “Waiting for Next Year” there is a piece about the Browns Bullet Points.

Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta Falcons

The next game with a touch of carolina blue is the one that has players from Chapel Hill on both rosters. In a game that was played in the Georgia Dome (in front of 67,313 fans) it was the Carolina Panthers (+5.5) taking on the Atlanta Falcons. For the visiting squad there are two ex Heels, both defensive ends, but definitely at two different points in their career. First is 8th year veteran Julius Peppers, who had two tackles (both solo) in the game. While the other is second year man Hilee Taylor, a third stringer, who did not see any action (boxscore wise at least) in this game. On the other side it’s an offensive lineman, Garrett Reynolds, a second string tackle for the Falcons. In the end, it’s the home squad winning taking this game as Atlanta beat Carolina 28-20. At the NFL Gridiron Gab the recap about this game is entitled Falcons Turn Away Panthers.

New York Jets

New York Jets

And the final game for this first part of the “Heels in the League” (NFL) is the game between another two squads that carry ex Tar Heels on roster. It’s the game with maybe the most hype due to a lot of trash talking, as the New England Patriots (-4) traveled south to Giants Stadium to take on the other team that plays there, the New York Jets in front of 78,312 fans. For head coach Bill Belichick there are two players on his roster that come from Chapel Hill, and both are wide receivers. First one is rookie Brandon Tate and the other is Sam Aiken, both low on the totem pole and both not getting any action in the game. On the other side, the N.Y. Jets have a receiver from UNC, his name Wallace Wright. He too is low on the depth chart and didn’t get to see the field. In the end, after talking the talk, the home squad also walked the walk as New York took down New England in a low scoring game that ended 16-9, with the Pats not scoring in the second half. My good friend Jeff Sack entitles the recap of the game Ryan’s Hopes Come True! Jets Beat Patriots 16-9!. I would say it was the hopes of the Jets nation that came true yesterday! Josh Q Public say that everyone should “leave Tom Brady alone“. After a game like that I doubt that both the media and the blogs will do that!
