Heels in the League (NBA) Bucks vs Hawks (Game 7)

Bucks vs Hawks

Bucks vs Hawks

In what I find an absurdity, yesterday the Milwaukee Bucks and the Atlanta Hawks played Game 7 of their first round series (a day after the Celtics and Cavs played Game 1 of the second round). Both of these teams have a touch of Carolina Blue, so while it’s the end of one them, there will still be an ex UNC player moving on from this match up. And while we are talking about two players coming from Chapel Hill they both have a much different path. For the guest team it’s 14 veteran Jerry Stackhouse, who joined the Bucks mid way through the season and helped them get into the playoffs coming off the bench. For the home squad we have one and done Marvin Williams, who has been with the Hawks for four years and is their starting small forward (and has been for 2 seasons). The first at the end of his career, where he averaged 18 points for his career (compared to 8.5 ppg this year), 3.6 APG (1.7) and 3.4 RPG (2.4). The other at the beginning of his second contract, one that is paying him $ 7.5 millions per season. Williams is averaging 11.9 PPG for his career (10.1 for year), 5.4 RPG (5.1) and 1.4 APG (1.1).

As far as the game from yesterday went it was pretty anti-climatic for being a deciding game in a very good match up. But I am sure it was good enough for the 19,241 fans that were at the Philips Arena for this one. For Jerry Stackhouse it is a small appearance, coming in for just 14 minutes. In that time the shooting guard scored no points (0 for 3 ~ 0 for 1 ~ 0 for 0) to go with a rebound, a steal and a -6 pts differential. On the other side, Marvin Williams got plenty of playing time, 30 minutes in all, but didn’t do much scoring wise. In all the small forward got eight points (2 for 7 ~ 0 for 0 ~ 4 for 4) to go with nine rebounds (six offensive), two assists, a steal and a pts differential of +13.

The final numbers for the series for the two Heels are as follow:

Jerry Stackhouse: 20.6 MinsPG (last 3 out of 4 games he only played 14 minutes though), 7.3 PPG (scoring in double figures in Game 2 and 3), 1.7 RPG and 1.1 APG.

Marvin Williams: 30.9 MinsPG, 9.6 PPG (scoring in double figures 3 out of 7 games), 6.4 RPG (having at least two offensive rebounds in each game), 1.0 APG.

The game was in the Hawks’ hands from the get go, as they took the first quarter by seven points, with the tally being 20 to 13, They almost doubled the lead by the end of the second, 53 to 40. And while the third quarter was even at 20 points a piece that could not help the Bucks, who then fell in the last 12 minutes 22 to 14, making the final score 95 to 74 for Atlanta. You have to be happy for the young team from the East Coast, which is now going to move on to play the Orlando Magic, for the fans of the Bucks and for the Tar Heels fans it would not be a stretch to believe that at 35 years old this was the final go around for Stackhouse.
