In what is going to be the last edition of “Heels in the League” (NBA) I write in this year (heck this decade) it will have to be divided into two (the second part coming tomorrow) because it’s that big, with seven games involving Carolina players. One of them being a head to head match up between two teams that have just played the night before. So, sit back and relax as we go through the first half of the games from Wednesday, December 30, 2009…
The first game of the night, and the only head to head game, has the Atlanta Hawks going to C-Town to take on the Cleveland Cavaliers. The game is played at the Quicken Loans Arena in front of a sell out crowd that numbered 20,562 (max capacity: 20,562). For the visiting team it’s forward Marvin Williams, who starts for the Hawks and gets 31 minutes in all. In that time the ex national champion scores 8 points (4 for 5 ~ 0 for 1 ~ 0 for 0) to go with seven rebounds, one assist, one steal, a block and a turnover on the night. On the other side we have the duo of Jawad Williams and Danny Green, who both do not see any action, with the first one being a (DNP – Coach’s Decision) and the latter not even dressing for the game. At the end of it all, on LeBron James’ birthday, it’s Cleveland beating Atlanta by the final of 106 to 101. With the W the Cavaliers are now 26 and 8 (.765 winning percentage) and leading the Eastern Conference by a 1.5 games. While the loss pushes down the Hawks to 21 and 10 (.677 winning percentage), in fourth place in the Eastern Conference, trailing by 3.5 games.

The second game of this recap it’s the Indiana Pacers hosting the Memphis Grizzlies at the Conseco Fieldhouse in front of 14,471 fans (max capacity: 18,345). For the home squad it’s rookie forward Tyler Hansbrough, who does not play once again (DNP – Inner Ear Infection). As far as the game is concerned it’s Memphis taking this high scoring game, defeating Indiana by the final score of 121 to 110. With the loss Indiana is still trying to get into double digit wins, stuck at 9 and 22 right now (.290 winning percentage), 15.5 games back from the leader in the Eastern Conference and 3.5 behind the eighth place team.

We move on down to the sunshine state, where the Orlando Magic and the Milwaukee Bucks match up at the Amway Arena in front of a crowd of 17,461 (max capacity: 17,519). For the home team we see shooting guard Vince Carter, who gets 30 minutes in this game. He scores a team high 25 points (10 for 16 ~ 1 for 2 ~ 4 for 4) to go with four assists, three rebounds, a block and a whopping five TOs. In the end it was all good though as Orlando defeated Milwaukee by 25 points, with the final tally being 117 to 92.
