As the new year comes closer and closer the National Basketball Association is still going strong. In yesterday’s slate there were seven games, four of them have a touch of carolina blue, with two of them having players from Chapel Hill on both benches. As we all know be it all or just one Carolina player in action and there will be a recap about it, which I call “Heels in the League” (NBA). So, without further interruptions, let’s get going with this edition containing the games from Monday, December 28, 2009…

The first game of the night has the Charlotte Bobcats hosting the Milwaukee Bucks at the Time Warner Cable Arena in front of a crowd of 15,473 (max capacity: 19,026). For the home team it’s point guard Raymond Felton, who starts and gets 31 minutes for another Heel, head coach Larry Brown. In that time frame he gets 11 points (4 for 6 ~ 2 for 3 ~ 1 for 2) to go with six rebounds and three assists on the night. In the end it was Charlotte winning this one by ten, defeating Milwaukee 94 to 84. With the win the Bobcats move to 5 games under .500 at 12 and 17 (.414 winning percentage) and are eighth in the conference, half a game ahead of the Bulls.

The forward also had a steal and a turnover on the night. Haywood, who played 45 minutes, was also close to a double double, scoring 12 points (5 for 8 ~ 0 for 0 ~ 2 for 5) to go with nine rebounds (5 offensive), five blocks, an assist and a TO. In a game that went into OT, it was Memphis winning it by 5 points, beating Washington by the final of 116 to 111. With the loss the Wizs are now 10 and 19 on the year (.345 winning percentage) putting them 2 games behind the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The first game that has a head to head matchup it’s the Denver Nuggets against the Sacramento Kings. The game is played in front of a crowd that numbered 14,458 (max capacity: 17,317) at the ARCO Arena. For the visiting team from the mile high city it’s rookie Ty Lawson, getting the start again, playing 38 minutes in all. The speedster scores a dozen points (5 for 13 ~ 0 for 2 ~ 2 for 2) to go with six assists, four boards (2 off. ones), two steals and one turnover. For the home team we have ex UNC big man Sean May, who once again dresses but doesn’t see any action (DNP – Coach’s Decision). In the end, in a pretty close game, it’s Sacramento beating Denver by 5, with the final score being 106 to 101. With the loss the Nuggets are no 20 and 12 (.625 winning percentage) while holding the third spot in the Western Conference (5 games behind conference leader LA Lakers). With the win the Kings are now just 2 games under .500 at 14 and 16 (.466 winning percentage) and are three games behind the eighth place Jazz in the Western Conference.

And finally, in another head to head match up, we have the Boston Celtice going cross country to take on the Golden State Warriors at the Oracle Arena in front of a basically sold out crowd of 19,259 (max capacity: 19,596). For the visiting team from the east it’s another big man, Rasheed Wallace, who gets 21 minutes coming off the bench. In that time the ex pupil of Dean Smith gets six points (2 for 5 ~ 2 for 5 ~ 0 for 0) to go with four boards, one assist and a steal. While on the other side, for the Warriors, we should see Brandan Wright, but we won’t as he is still recovering from his shoulder surgery. In the end, in what has to be an upset, Golden State hands Boston his second loss in a row by the final score of 103 to 99. With the W the Warriors are 9 and 21 (.300 winning percentage) and are 8 games behind from the eighth place playoff race in the Western Conference. The loss drops the Celtics to 23 and 7 (.766) and still leading the Eastern Conference (tied with the Cavs).
