As we all await for today’s North Carolina/Texas match up (as well as the beginning of the college bowl season) let’s get going with this edition of “Heels in the League” (NBA) from yesterday’s games. In all the National Basketball Association had 11 games on tap, seven of them have a touch of carolina blue, two of those had UNC players on both benches. Being that there are so many games I will be splitting this recap into two parts, the second one probably coming before the UNC/Tx game. So, with such a fun filled day, let’s get it going with the recap from Friday, December 18, 2009…
First game has the Atlanta Hawks hosting the Utah Jazz at the Philips Arena in front of 17,501 (max capacity 19,445). For the home team we have one and done Marvin Williams starting for the Hawks at the small forward position. The ex national champion gets 30 minutes, where he scores 15 points (6 for 10 ~ 1 for 2 ~ 2 for 2) to go with four rebounds, an assist, a steal and a TO. As far as the game is concerned, in what was a pretty easy win it was Atlanta beating Utah by double digits, with the final score being 96 to 83. With the victory the Hawks are now 19 and 7 for the `09-`10 season. At my favorite blog for the Hawks, Peachtree Hoops, they say Josh Smith does not care who wins awards since he is earning them about the game, while Stephen Rhodes (Slam Dunk Central) talks about a Third Quarter 30-6 Run Helps Hawks Blitz Jazz 96-83
Next game of the night has the Philadelphia 76′ers going up north to take on the Boston Celtics at the TD Garden with a crowd that numbered 18,624 (max capacity: 18,854). For the home team we have ex UNC big man, Rasheed Wallace, who only gets nine minutes in this one. For the ex pupil of Dean Smith it’s a five point night (2 for 4 ~ 0 for 0 ~ 1 for 2), to go with three rebounds, a steal and a pair of turnovers. In a game decided at the last second by a Brand tip in it was Philadelphia defeating Boston by one, with the final score of 98 to 97, snapping the Celtics 11 game winning streak. With the loss the C’s are now 20 and 5 for the year. Jeff Sack, of Slam Dunk Central, calls his recap A Brand New Day! Sixers Stun Celtics On Elton’s Tip-In 98-97!
The third game we have for this recap is the one that puts the Denver Nuggets going to the big easy to take on the New Orleans Hornets. A game played in front of 14,453 spectators (max capacity: 18,500) at the New Orleans Arena. For the visiting team we have speedster Ty Lawson, who gets 26 minutes off the bench, scoring 14 points (6 for 10 ~ 2 for 4 ~ 0 for 0), to go along with three rebounds, two assists and a pair of TOs on the night. With Paul leading the way it was New Orleans defeating Denver by 6, with the final tally being 98 to 92. With the loss the Nuggets are now
And the last game for this first half of the recap is the Cleveland Cavaliers hosting the Milwaukee Bucks at Quicken Loans Arena in front of a crowd of 20,562 (max capacity: 20,562). For the home squad we have a pair of Tar Heels and national champs, Jawad Williams (`05) and Danny Green (`09). While Williams dresses for the game he does not see any action in this one (DNP – Coach’s Decision), while Green is not even on the bench. Thanks to a good defense it is Cleveland winning a tight one, beating Milwaukee by 3, 85 to 82. With the W the Cavs are now 20 and 7 on the season. My good friend Jeff Sack, owner of Slam Dunk Central has the recap of the game, which he entitles Cavaliers Hold Off Late Challenge By Bucks, Win 85-82
