Heels in the League (NBA) 11/18/09 (Part 2)
Way behind on the second half of the games from Wednesday, November 18, 2009, here are the three games from that night. (If you are looking for the first half of the games you can find them here). Also, on 11/19/09 there were no ex Carolina player in action, so the next recap is about the games from 11/20/09. As far as this recap is concerned, there is only three games, but it has five teams with UNC players on it (two game with head to head match up) as well as the return of one of the ex Tar Heels to action. So, without further interruptions, here is the post I call “Heels in the League” (NBA) for 11/18/09…
First game is a head to head match up between two teams that both have two ex Heels on them. It’s the Cleveland Cavaliers going east to the nation’s capital to take on the Washington Wizards at the Verizon Center in front of 20,173 fans. For the Cavaliers it’s the combo of Danny Green and Jawad Williams, who both get 2 minutes in the game and neither have anything for the box score with the exception of Green going 0 for 1 from the field and a defensive rebound. For the home squad the two ex Carolina players, Antawn Jamison and Brendan Haywood, get plenty of action and do a lot with it. Jamison, playing in his first game of this season, gets 38 minutes at the power forward slot. In that time the ex Heel and NPOY under Dean Smith gets a double double, with 31 points (12 for 22 ~ 2 for 7 ~ 5 for 6), 10 rebounds (six offensive), two assists, a block and a pair of turnovers. Haywood, who plays 30 minutes, scores six points (1 for 1 ~ 0 for 0 ~ 4 for 0) to go with 13 boards and three blocks. In the end it was Washington over Cleveland by the final of 108 to 91. With the win the Wizs are now 3 and 7, while the loss slides the Cavs to 8 and 4. At Slam Dunk Central there is their recap of the game done by Jeff Sack. Truth About It also has their recap, entitled Don’t Call It A Statement, Call It A Rivalry: Wizards Spank Cavs 108-91.
The next game is another head to head match up of teams with one (and not two) ex Heels on it. It’s the Golden State Warriors making the cross country trip to bean town to take on the Boston Celtics at the TD Garden in front of 18,624 fans. The Warriors’ ex Heel, Brandan Wright, is still not playing, so not too much to report on this, while on the other side, for the Celtics it’s Rasheed Wallace getting 16 minutes of playing time. In that time frame the ex UNC big man scores eight points (3 for 8 ~ 2 for 6 ~ 0 for 0) to go along with one rebound, one assist, one steal and a turnover. When it was all said and done it would be Boston winning this one by double digits, defeating Golden State by the final of 109 to 95. With the W the Celtics are now 9 and 3, while the loss puts the Warriors at 3 and 8.
The last game of this recap and of 11/18/09 it’s the Houston Rockets taking on the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Taarget Center in front of 11,137 fans. For the home team it’s rookie Wayne Ellington giving the TWolves a touch of carolina blue. In this game the shooting guard and national champion does not play (DNP – Coach’s Decision). As far as the game was concerned it’s Houston defeating Minnesota by 13 points, with the final score being 97 to 84. With the loss Minnesota drops to 1-11 on the season.
