Heels in the League (NBA) 10/30/09 (Part One)

Heels in the League (NBA) 10/30/09Still in catch up mode here is the next edition of “Heels in the League” (NBA) for the games from Friday, October 30, 2009. After a very small slate on Thursday this one has thirteen games altogether. Most of the ex North Carolina players in the National Basketball Association, with the exception of one, were in action on this day (so, just like the last time that there were more than four games I am going to divide this day into two posts). Since I am still behind in these daily posts make sure to look for another edition of them in the early afternoon and probably one in the evening. So, without further ado, let’s get going with the games from October 30, 2009…

In the first game of the night it’s the New York Knicks going down south to play the Charlotte Bobcats, in a game that was played at the Time Warner Cable Arena in front of 18,624 fans. For the Bobcats it’s the speedy point guard Raymond Felton, who is in the starting five in this game. The ex Heel and national champion played for 49 minutes in this game, scoring 22 points (8 for 18 ~ 0 for 2 ~ 6 for 7), plus nine assists, eight rebounds and two steals. Felton also had two turnovers on the night. In the end, after not one, but two overtimes, Charlotte won the game, outlasting New York by the final of 102 to 100. At the Bobcats Planet there is the recap of the game, while over at the Queen City Hoops (TrueHoop Network) they also have a recap as well of the game. Finally Rufus on Fire (SBNation) with his recap of the Knicks and the Bobcats.

The second game that has a touch of carolina on both side of the benches as the Washington Wizards head south to take on the Atlanta Hawks at Philips Arena in front of 17,079 fans. For the Wizards there are two ex UNC players: Brendan Haywood and Antawn Jamison. Haywood, who starts at center in this game, almost has a double double with 19 points (7 for 12 ~ 0 for 0 ~ 5 for 7), nine rebounds and two blocks on the night, playing 34 minutes. Jamison, who will be playing forward when he comes back from his injury, didn’t play in this one. On the other side of the floor, the Hawks have Marvin Williams, who starts at forward. The ex Heel and national champ played 32 minutes, also coming close to a double double, scoring 10 points (2 for 7 ~ 1 for 4 ~ 5 for 6), nine rebounds and two steals. In the end it’s Atlanta winning by doubt digits, taking down Washington by the final of 100 to 89. For the Wizs, it’s the TrueHoop Network blog Truth About It, the recap is entitled Hawks air out Wizards, while the Bullets Forever the post talks about the Wizs not going 82-0 this season. On the other side it’s PeachTreeHoop, with the recap.

The next game in where there is an ex UNC player is the one that has the Chicago Bulls coming to the east coast to the TD Center to play the Boston Celtics in front of 18,624 fans. For the home team the touch of carolina blue comes in the shape of forward/center Rasheed Wallace, who got 26 minutes off the bench (most minutes of anyone that was not starting). In that time frame the ex pupil of Dean Smith had seven points (2 for 9 ~ 1 for 6 ~ 2 for 2) with three rebounds, two assists and a steal. Wallace also had two turnovers on the night against the Bulls. When it was all said and done this was a massacre with Boston taking down Chicago by 28, with the final tally being 118 to 90. Jeff Sack (Slam Dunk Central) entitled his recap Celtics Slaughter Bulls 118-90 Start off Season 3-0! I guess beating someone by 28 points can be described as a slaughter!

The last game for this half of this post is the one between the Sacramento Kings and the New Orleans Hornets, played at the New Orleans Arena in front of 17,036 fans. For the visiting Kings it’s Sean May, who starts at the power forward spot and gets 22 minutes in all. The ex Heel and national champion under Roy Williams got seven points (3 for 4 ~ 0 for 0 ~ 1 for 2), seven rebounds, three steals and two assists to go along with two turnovers. In the end it was New Orleans winning this game, defeating Sacramento by the final of 97 to 92. At Sactown Royalty (SBNation) the recap is entitled Hornets 97, Kings 92 – Kings playoffs magic number reduced to 79 . I will say this, that title did make me laugh, but on the other hand it is very accurate!
