Heels in the League (NBA) 03/07/10
Wanting to catch up with this post in order to then clean up all of the events from the secondary sports in Chapel Hill this weekend here is the next edition of “Heels in the League” (NBA) for the games from Sunday, March 7, 2010. The National Basketball Association’s slate was not too big on this date, with just six games in all, four of them with a touch of Carolina Blue, none of them being head to head match ups. In the meantime here is this edition of “Heels in the League” (NBA) for the games from 03/06/10…
The first game of this recap is an East/West battle between last year’s NBA Finals squads. That means we have the Orlando Magic (EC 1st SE) playing host to the Los Angeles Lakers (WC 1st Pacific) in what is the second (of two) games between the teams with the first one going to LA. The game was played at the Amway Arena in front of a crowd that numbered 17,641 (max capacity: 17,248). In this one, for the home squad, we have veteran guard Vince Carter (56 Games: 30.7 MinsPG ~ 16.2 PPG ~ 2.9 APG ~ 4.2 RPG), who starts for the Magic and gets a total of 35 minutes in all. For the shooting guard its a team high 25 points (5 for 10 ~ 2 for 4 ~ 13 for 14) to go with three rebounds, one assist, a steal and three TOs whileing having a team high +12 pts differential. In the end, it what was a tight game that was entertaining to watch on ABC, Orlando beat Los Angeles by a duece, with the final score being 96 to 94. With the win the Magic are now 44-20 overall (.688 winning percentage), 25-6 at home (.806 winning percentage) and are second in the East, 5.0 games behind the conference leader.

The second game of the night it’s the Boston Celtics (EC 1st Atlantic) playing host to the Washington Wizards (EC 5th SE) in what is the third (of four) games between these franchises, with the first two games having been won by Boston. The game was played at the TD Garden with a sold out attendance of 18,624 (max capacity: 18,624). For the home squad it’s ex UNC big man Rasheed Wallace (57 Games: 23.5 MinsPG ~ 9.7 PPG ~ 4.1 RPG ~ 0.8 BPG), who come off the bench for 18 minutes in this game. In that time the ex pupil of Dean Smith had a four points performance (1 for 6 ~ 0 for 2 ~ 2 for 2) to go with three rebounds, an assist, a block and a -7 pts differential on the night. As far as the game was concerned it was Boston overcoming trailing at the start of the 4th quarter and winning this game by three points, defeating Washington by the final of 86 to 83. With the W the Celtics are now 40-21 overall (. winning percentage), 18-11 at home (.620 winning percentage) and are in third place in the East, 7.5 behind the conference leader and just 0.5 ahead of the fourth squad.

The second to last game of the recap is the one that has the Sacramento Kings (WC 4th Pacific) playing host to the Oklahoma City Thunder (WC 3rd NW). The game, which was played in front of a crowd of 12,081 (max capacity: 17,371) at the ARCO Arena, is the fourth (of four) meeting, with Oklahoma City winning two of the first three. In this one, for the home squad, we should be seeing ex UNC big man and national champion Sean May, but he does not play in this one (DNP – Coach’s Decision). In this one it was once again Oklahoma City taking it, beating Sacramento by a half dozen, with the final tally being 108 to 102. With the loss the Kings are now 21-42 on the year (.333 winning percentage) and 15-15 at home (.500 winning percentage).

And we wrap this all up with the game that has two divisional foes going at it as the Denver Nuggets (WC 1st NW) plays host to the Portland Trail Blazers (WC 4th NW) in what is the third (of four) meeting of the teams with the first two games going to Portland. The game is played at the Pepsi Center in front of 17,266 (max capacity: 19,309). For the team from the Mile High City we should be seeing rookie point guard Ty Lawson, but the speedster does not even dress for this one due to an injury. As far as the game is concerned, it’s Denver taking this one by a dozen, defeating Portland by the final score of 118 to 106. With the win the Nuggets are now 42-21 overall (.667 winning percentage), 28-5 at home (.848 winning percentage) and are third in the West, 3.5 games behind the conference leader, 0.5 games behind the second team and 1.5 ahead of the fourth squad.
