Heels in the League (NBA) 02/27/10
And once again I am a bit late doing my daily recap about the ex North Carolina players in the National Basketball Association. In this edition of “Heels in the League” (NBA) we check on the games from yesterday, Saturday, February 27, 2010. In all there were seven games, five of them with a touch of Carolina Blue, none of them being head to head match ups. If you want to check out the full run down for the day you can always go to to the World Leader in Sports, where you can see everything from the seven games. But for now enjoy this recap for the games from 02/27/10…
The first game of the night is a divisional clash as the Boston Celtics (EC 1st Atlantic) play host to the New Jersey Nets (EC 5th Atlantic). This is the fourth time (out of four) that these two teams will have played this season, with Boston winning all of them. The game was played in front of 18,624 at the TD Garden. In this one, for the team from Bean Town, it’s ex UNC big man Rasheed Wallace (54 Games: 23.5 MinsPG ~ 9.9 PPG ~ 4.1 RPG ~ 0.8 BPG), who comes off the bench to play 29 minutes in all. For the 35 year old center it’s a pretty ok night as he scores nine points (4 for 13 ~ 1 for 5 ~ 0 for 0) to go with six rebounds, two assists, two TOs and a -4 pts differential. In what had to be the upset of the week (if not the month) it was New Jersey winning this one by eight points, defeating Boston by the final score of 104 to 96. With the defeat the Celtics are now 36-21 overall (.632 winning percentage), 16-11 at home (.592 winning percentage) and in fourth place in the East, 8.5 games behind the conference leader.

The next game is the one that has the Milwaukee Bucks (EC 3rd Central) going down south to the sunshine state to take on the Miami Heat (EC 4th SE). This is the third game (of four) between the two franchises, with Milwaukee winning the first two games so far. This game is played at the AmericanAirlines Arena in front of a crowd that numbered 18,883. In this one, for the visiting team, it’s veteran Jerry Stackhouse (19 Games: 20.3 MinsPG ~ 7.6 PPG ~ 1.8 APG ~ 2.7 RPG), who comes off the bench for the Bucks to play for 25 minutes. In that time the shooting guard scored way above his average, getting 16 (6 for 10 ~ 4 for 7 ~ 0 for 0) to go with three rebounds, an assist and a block while having a +14 pts differential. As far as the game was concerned it is Milwaukee by a landslide in this one, beating Miami by 23 points, with the final score being 94 to 71. With the win the Bucks are now 30-28 on the season (. winning percentage), 12-19 on the road (.387 winning percentage) and holding on to the seventh spot in the East, 15.5 games behind the conference leader and 1.0 games ahead of the last slot for the playoffs.

The third game of the night is another divisional battle as the Indiana Pacers (EC 5th Central), who might be without rookie lottery pick Tyler Hansbrough for the remainder of the season, plays host to the Chicago Bulls (EC 2nd Central). This is the fourth game (of four) of the season between these franchises with Chicago having won all the other games. In all there were 18,165 to view this contest at Conseco Fieldhouse. As we all know, this should be where we talk about ex NPOY Tyler Hansbrough, but he is battling this inner ear infection that seems to have sidelined him for the rest of the year. The rookie should be happy with his team however, as they defeated Chicago in this one by 10, with the final score being 100 to 90. With the victory the Pacers are now 20-39 on the year (. winning percentage), 13-16 at home (.448 winning percentage) and holding the second to last spot in the East, 9.0 games out of playoff hopes.

This game was played in front of a crowd of 19,266 at the Target Center. For the home squad it’s rookie Wayne Ellington (59 Games: 17.8 MinsPG ~ 6.3 PPG ~ 0.9 APG ~ 2.1 RPG), who comes off the pine to play for 15 minutes in this one. In that time frame the shooting guard scores five points (2 for 4 ~ 1 for 2 ~ 0 for 0) to go with one assist, a block and a pts differential of -1. In the end this year Portland clean sweeps this series, defeating Minnesota by 19, with the final score being 110 to 91. With the loss the TWolves slide to 14-47 overall (. winning percentage), 9-21 at home (.300 winning percentage) and are dead last in the West, 20.5 games behind the last playoff squad.
