After a very small “Heels in the League” (NBA) for 02/18/10, the on for yesterday, Friday, February 19, 2010 is the biggest one I have ever done, with nine (out of 12) games having a touch of Carolina Blue, with three of them being head to head match ups. Since nine games are way too many for just one post I have to divide this into two. Here is the first part, and hopefully tonight/early tomorrow morning there will be the second part of it. But for now I hope you enjoy this edition of “Heels in the League” (NBA) for the games from 02/19/10…
The first game of the night has a team with a Heel against a team that had two Heels before the NBA trade dead line as the Denver Nuggets (WC 1st Northwest) headed to the nation’s capital to take on the Washington Wizards (EC 5th Southeast). The game, the first of two battles between these squads, is played at the Verizon Center in front of a crowd of 17,212. For the visiting squad from the Mile High City it’s rookie Ty Lawson (51 Games: 22.1 MinsPG ~ 9.3 PPG ~ 3.4 APG ~ 0.8 SPG) who got 15 minutes in this game. In that time the point guard, who had 40 family members and friends in his return home, scored six points (2 for 4 ~ 0 for 0 ~ 2 for 2) to go with three assists, a rebound and a turnover while having a -7 pts differential. In what was a definite upset it was Washington beating Denver by ten points, with the final score being 107 to 97. With the loss the Nuggets are now 36 and 19 overall (.655 winning percentage), 13 and 14 on the road (.481 winning percentage) and are second in the West, 5.5 games behind the conference leader.

The second game of this recap is the first head to head match up between the Cleveland Cavaliers (EC 1st Central) and the Charlotte Bobcats (EC 4th Southeast) in a game that was played in front of 19,568 fans at the Time Warner Cable Arena. This is the fourth time (out of four) these two teams have played this season with Bobcats having won two out of three. For the visiting team it’s a trio of Heels, with Antawn Jamison (42 Games: 38.6 MinsPG ~ 20.0 PPG ~ 8.8 RPG ~ 0.2 BPG) and Jawad Williams (31 Games: 12.3 MinsPG ~ 4.0 PPG ~ 1.4 RPG ~ 0.1 BPG) getting minutes off the bench, while Danny Green didn’t even suit up for this one. Jamison, who was just traded from Washington, got 26 minutes, where he scored just two points on a real bad shooting night (0 for 12 ~ 0 for 4 ~ 2 for 2) to go with seven rebounds, an assist and a steal while having a -17 pts differential. Williams instead lost a lot of minutes, only playing three, scoring no points (0 for 1 ~ 0 for 0 ~ 0 for 0) and nothing else with a pts differential of 0. In the end the game was another upset as Charlotte took the game by 17 points, defeating Cleveland by the final score of 110 to 93. With the win the Bobcats are now 27-26 on the year (.509 winning percentage) , 20 and 7 at home (.740 winning percentage) and in eighth place in the East, 14.5 games of the top squad and 2.0 ahead of the first team out of the playoffs. With the loss the Cavs drop to 43 and 13 for the season (.768 winning percentage) and 19 and 9 on the road (.678 winning percentage) while being the top team in the East.

Moving on with this recap we now have an East/West battle with the Indiana Pacers (EC 5th Central) and the New Orleans Hornets (WC 4th Southwest) goint at it at the New Orleans Arena in front of a crowd that numbered 15,644. This is the second time (out of two) that these franchise have met in the season, with New Orleans having won the first match up. In this one we should be seeing lottery pick Tyler Hansbrough, but the inner ear infection has him still waiting to return to the line up. For now no timeline has been set for when the power forward will be back in uniform for the Pacers. In this game it was New Orleans taking it by six points, beating Indiana by the final score of 107 to 101. With the loss the Pacers are 18 and 36 overall (.333 winning percentage), 6 and 21on the road (.222 winning percentage) while being the 14th in the East, 9.5 games out of the playoff race.

This is the fourth of four times that these two squad will meet, with Detroit having won two of the previous three games. In this one, for the visiting team, we have veteran guard Jerry Stackhouse (14 Games: 19.9 MinsPG ~ 6.9 PPG ~ 1.9 APG ~ 2.4 RPG) who plays 19 minutes coming off the bench. In that time frame the shooting guard scores almost double his average with 12 points (4 for 8 ~ 1 for 3 ~ 3 for 4) to go with three rebounds and a TO while having a pts differential of +8. The game was won by Milwaukee, defeating Detroit by six points, with the final tally being 91 to 85.
