(NBA) 01/01/10In this edition of “Heels in the League” (NBA) we check the games from Friday, January 1, 2010, where there are three games in all, and all have a team with a touch of carolina blue, one of them with UNC players on both benches. We can say that the National Basketball Association rang in the new year’s with North Carolina on their mind! So, sit back and relax as we go through this recap from the games of 01/01/10…

The first one has the Atlanta Hawks playing host to the New York Knicks. A game played at the Philips Arena in front of 17,336 (max capacity: 19,415). For the home team we have forward Marvin Williams, who starts for the Hawks and gets 30 minutes in all. In that time frame the one and done Heel scores 11 points (5 for 9 ~ 1 for 2 ~ 0 for 0) to go with two rebounds and an assist. In the end, in a game that went into overtime, it was New York winning this game, beating Atlanta by four points, with the final score being 112 to 108. With the loss the Hawks are now 21 and 11 (.656 winning percentage) and in fourth place in the Eastern Conference (four game behind the conference leader).

The second game of this recap is the one between the teams that both have Carolina players on their benches. It’s the Orlando Magic heading to the Target Center to take on the Minnesota Timberwolves in a game that had an attendance of 17,065 (max capacity: xxxxx). For the visiting team from the sunshine state we have shooting guard Vince Carter, who starts and gets 37 minutes in all. In that time frame he scores 12 points (3 for 10 ~ 1 for 4 ~ 5 for 6) to go with six assists, three steals and a couple of rebounds. On the other side, for the TWolves, we have another shooting guard, Wayne Ellington. He comes off the bench for 21 minutes where he scores 13 points (5 for 6 ~ 2 for 3 ~ 1 for 1) to go with four boards, an assist and two TOs. In the end, this one was won by Orlando, who defeated Minnesota by a dozen, with the final score being 106 to 94. With the W the Magic are now 24 and 8 (.750 winning percentage), just one game behind conference leading Cavs. The loss drops the TWolves to 7 and 27 (.206 winning percentage), dead last in the Western Conference, 20 games back of the conference leader and 12 games back of the eighth place team.

And finally, the last game of the night, is the Sacramento Kings going to take on the NBA Champions Los Angeles Lakers at the STAPLES Center in front of a crowd of 18,997 (max capacity: xxxxx). For the visiting team it’s ex UNC big man, Sean May, who once again sits by the whole game and does not get in (DNP – Coach’s Decision). As far as the game is concerned, in what was a very tight game, which the home team had to come from behind to win with a last second three, it’s Los Angeles beating Sacramento by one, with the final being 109 to 108. With the loss the Kings are now 14 and 18 on the year (.437 winning percentage), 12 games back of the conference leader and 4 games back of the eighth spot.
