A couple of days back the WNBA began, and that means for anyone that follows this league several ex players that once played at North Carolina are now playing in the pro’s. Unfortunately as you know already I been kind of busy with real life and so I was not able to start this daily post earlier, but I am here to start it now. So now it’s time to begin “Heels in the League” (WNBA), where I will recap the games played by the ex UNC players. The season began on June 6th with six games, and of course that means plenty of ex Heels in action (in all there are five ex Chapel Hill players in the league), with three games having a touch of carolina blue in them. So, sit back and relax as you enjoy the first ever “Heels in the League” (WNBA)…
In the first game, the Chicago Sky versus the Minnesota Lynx, played at the Target Center in front of 8,708 fans, we have not one but two players from Chapel Hill. It’s forward Rashanda McCants and forward/center LaToya Pringle, who both come off the bench to contribute for their team. McCants plays just a bit more than 10 minutes and goes 2 for 5 (0 for 1 from beyond the arc) for four points. She also added three rebounds, one assist and a turnover. While the Pringle, who played 15 minutes, scored 9 points (a perfect 4 for 4 from the field and 1 for 1 from the charity stripe), while adding two rebounds and an assist, but turning the ball over twice. Pringle had a +21 in the +/- points, which is very good. In the end it was Minnesota winning this one decisively, defeating Chicago by the final of 102 to 85, in a game that was televised by NBA.tv.
The second game is the one between the visiting Indiana Fever and the Atlanta Dream, played at the Philips Arena in front of just over 8,700 fans. For the home squad ex UNC guard Nikki Teasley starts for the Dream, playing over 41 minutes in all. In that time the ex Lady Heel scores 10 points (2 for 6 ~ 2 for 2 from 3 ~ 4 for 6 from the line), while adding six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Teasley did also have two turnovers on the night. In a squeaker it’s Atlanta winning by one, beating Indiana 87 to 86.
The last game of opening night that has a touch of carolina blue is the one between the Seattle Storm going to play the Sacramento Monarchs at Arco Arena in front of 14,824 fans. For the visiting squad it’s ex Tar Heel forward Camille Little, who did not have a great offensive game at all. Starting and getting over 23 minutes the Lady Heel scored one point in all, going 0 for 8 from the field and 1 for 2 from the free throw line. Little did add six rebounds, two assists and a steal in the game. In the end, it was still Seattle being able to win the gameby double figures, defeating Sacramento by the final tally of 71 to 61.
