Another day, another full schedule in both the Major and the minors, another time to do the recap in what I call “Heels in the League” (MLB). After being a very small schedule for the Majors two days ago, with two teams off and one post poned due to rain, yesterday all four of the squads were once again in action. In the minors, where the rain/wet grounds has been a problem, some teams still aren’t being able to get back to playing. So, sit back and relax as I give you the recap of all the 20+ ex Diamond Heels in the pro’s for 05/19/09…
The first game is the one between the Colorado Rockies (4th in the NL West – 11.5 games behind 1st) and the Atlanta Braves (3rd in the NL East – 2.5 games behind 1st) played at Turner Field in front of 16,749 fans (33.7% capacity). For the visiting team it’s Chris Iannetta, who caught the game and batted fifth in the lineup. The ex Heel went 0 for 3 walking once and striking out twice. But he was not the only one to have an off night as Atlanta (19-19, 7-11 home) beat Colorado (15-23, 8-13 away) by the final of 8 to 1.
The next game, this time in the American League, that had a touch of carolina blue is a divisional match up between the Baltimore Orioles (5th in the AL East – 9.5 games behind 1st) and the New York Yankees (3rd in the AL East – 3.5 games behind 1st) played in the billion dollar new Yankee Stadium in front of 42,838 fans (82% capacity). For the O’s it’s ex UNC infielder Brian Roberts, playing second base and leading off. The ex Heel went 1 for 4, scoring a run, stealing his 10th base of the season, striking out twice and leaving two men on the base paths. In the end this one was not close, as Roberts scored the only run for Baltimore (16-23, 5-12 away), as New York (22-17, 11-7 home) won by the final of 9 to 1.
In the next game, still in the American League, it’s another match up of the AL East where the Toronto Blue Jays (1st in AL East – 2.5 games in front of 2nd) come south of the border to play at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox (2nd in the AL East – 2.5 games behind 1st). For the home team ex UNC hurler Daniel Bard doesn’t play, but watches his squad squeezes one out as as Boston (23-16, 14-4 home) beats Toronto (27-15, 11-9 away) 2 to 1.
The last game of the night is the one between the Arizona Diamondbacks (5th in the NL West – 11.5 games behind 1st) and the Florida Marlins (4th in the NL East – 4.0 games behind 1st) played in the sunshine state. For the home team ex Carolina pitcher Andrew Miller is still not back from his rehab and does not play in this one. As far as the game itself, thanks to a five run 7th inning, Arizona (15-23, 6-8 away) wins this one, defeating Florida (18-21, 7-10 home) by the final of 5 to 3.
