Yet again it seems that the ex Diamond Heels were out in force yesterday, in both the Majors and the minors, meaning that once again it is time to do the daily post I call “Heels in the League” (MLB). Between the MLB, the Triple A, the Double A and the Single A there are 21 ex players from Chapel Hill and that to me just shows how well the program has gone under the tuteledge of Mike Fox and his coaching staff. As the season moves into the summer part of the game I will be doing some in depth pieces for a lot of these players, but for now enjoy this edition of “Heels in the League” (MLB)…

First game with an ex player from Chapel Hill is the one between the Los Angeles Dodgers (1st in the AL West – 6.0 ahead of 2nd) and the Florida Marlins (4th in the AL East – 3.5 games behind 1st), played in front of 16,332 fans (just above 42% capacity) in Dolphin Stadium. As we all know for the home squad Andrew Miller is still on rehab assignment. As far as this game is concerned it’s Los Angeles (26-13, 12-10 away) taking this one easily, defeating Florida (18-20, 7-9 home) by the final of 12 to 5.

Staying in the National Leauge the next match up with a touch of carolina blue is the one between the Colorado Rockies (4th in the NL West – 10.5 games behind 1st) and the Pittsburgh Pirates (6th in the NL Central – 7.0 games behind 1st). In a game played in front of 14,545 (just below 38% capacity) at PNC Park the ex UNC catcher for the Rockies, Chris Iannetta, does not get onto the field in this one, and watches Pittsburgh (16-21, 11-9 home) defeat Colorado (14-22, 7-12 away) by the final of 11 to 4, thanks to a 10 run surge in the seventh innings.

Box ScorePlay-By-Play

Switching now to the American League it’s the Boston Red Sox (2nd in the AL East – 3.0 games behind 1st) and the Seattle Mariners (3rd in AL West – 5.5 games behind 1st) playing at Safeco Field in front of 40,833 fans (just over 85% capacity). Ex Carolina pitcher Daniel Bard didn’t take the mound in this one for the visiting Sox, and watched his team go down yet again. Seattle (18-20, 9-8 home) beat Boston (22-16, 9-12 away) 3 to 2, with a ninth inning score.

Box ScorePlay-By-Play

Last game of the day, still in the American League, is the one between the Baltimore Orioles (5th in the AL East – 9.0 games behind 1st) and the Kansas City Royals (2nd in the AL Central – 1.0 games behind 1st). It’s ex North Carolina infielder Brian Roberts batting lead off and playing second base. The ex Diamond Heel went 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Roberts also had a walk and a strike out, while stealing a base and getting picked off once. In all, even with a full box score like Roberts had, it was Kansas City (20-18, 13-8 home) winning the game, beating Baltimore (16-22, 5-11 away) by the final tally of 7 to 4.
