As the weekend comes into full swing it’s once again time to check out what the ex Diamond Heels in the pro ranks did yesterday. And that means that here on The Fifth Corner it’s time to once again do our daily post “Heels in the League” (MLB). As we do all the time, first we are going to check the Major League, where there are currently four players from Chapel Hill on team’s rosters, and then check out the minor leagues, from Triple A to Double A to Single A. All of this is on the 05/15/09 edition of “Heels in the League” (MLB)…

The first game, from the American League, is the one between the Baltimore Orioles (5th in the AL East – 8.0 games behind 1st) and the Kansas City Royals (1st (tied) in the AL Central – 1.0 games ahed of 1st). For the visiting O’s second baseman Brian Roberts had a very good game, going 2 for 3 with a run scored and a walk. The ex Heel did also strike out, but definitely can not be blamed for the outcome of this game as he was amongst the best for the Orioles in this one. The game was won by Kansas City (19-17, 12-7 home), as they took this one from Baltimore (15-21, 4-10 away) by the final of 8 to 1. With the game starting at close to 11:00 p.m. EST due to rain, over at Camden Chat the title of their recap is “Adam Eaton still stinks“.

Staying with the American League, another game with a touch of carolina blue is the one that matches up the Boston Red Sox (2nd in the AL East – 2.0 games behind 1st) and the Seattle Mariners (3rd in the AL West – 4.5 games behind 1st), in a game that was played in front of 34,952 (73% capacity) fans at Safeco Field. For the visiting Sox it’s ex UNC pitcher Daniel Bard getting some action on the mound. The Triple A prospect just brought up went 1.1 (6 batters faced) giving up no runs on 2 hits and nothing else. Unfortunatel this was just not enough as Seattle (17-19, 8-7 home) beat Boston (21-15, 8-11 away) by the final of 5 to 4.

Moving to the National League the next game that has an ex UNC player on a roster is in the game between the Colorado Rockies (2nd in the NL West – 6.0 games back of 1st) and the Pittsburgh Pirates (6th in the NL Central – 7.0 games behind 1st), For the visiting team it’s catcher Chris Iannetta, who had an ok game at PNC Park in front of 17,179 (close to 45% capacity). The ex Heel went 1 for 4 leaving two men stranded. In the end it was Colorado (14-20, 7-10 away) winning the game on the road, taking this one from Pittsburgh (14-21, 9-9 home) by the final tally of 3-1, with all three runs scored in the top of the ninth.

Box ScorePlay-By-Play

The last game in the Majors with a touch of carolina blue, still in the National League, it’s the Los Angeles Dodgers (1st in the NL West – 6.0 games ahead of 2nd) coming cross country to take on the Florida Marlins (4th in the NL East – 3.5 games behind 1st) in the sunshine state. As we know by now the ex Diamond Heel on the Marlins’ roster, pitcher Andrew Miller, is still rehabbing in the minors. As far as this game goes it is Los Angeles (25-12, 11-9 away) coming from behind and winning the game, defeating slumping Florida (17-19, 6-8 home) by the final of 6 to 4.
