Heels in the League 05/14/09 (MLB)
As we come to the conclusion of the working week (and I know for all that is a great time) it’s time for yet another recap of how the ex Diamond Heels are doing in the pro’s. Yesterday all the team in the Majors with a touch of carolina blue were in action (even if not all the ex Heels were in action with them), as were most of the minor teams as well, so it’s time for what we here at The Fifth Corner call “Heels in the League” (MLB). So, without further interruptions, let’s get on with the run down of the games for the 05/14/09 edition of this post…
First game of the night is the one between the Florida Marlins (4th in the NL East – 2.5 games behind 1st) and the Milwaukee Brewers (1st (tied) in the NL Central – 0.5 games ahead of 2nd), played at Miller Park in front of 35,658 fan (just over 85% capacity). For the visiting team ex UNC pitcher Andrew Miller is not with them as he is still in rehab in the minors. The game was won by Milwaukee (21-14, 12-7 home) by the final of 5 to 3, with the defeat Florida (17-18, 11-11 away) falls for the first time below .500 after starting off the season red hot.
Jumping to the American League now, the next game features the Boston Red Sox (2nd in the AL East – 1.0 games behind 1st) heading cross country to take on the Los Angeles Angels (2nd in the AL West – 1.5 games behind 1st). In this game ex UNC hurler Daniel Bard doesn’t pitch, and watches a tight game that goes into extra innings. However, in the end, it’s Los Angeles (18-15, 12-8 home) defeating Boston (21-14, 8-10 away) by a run, 5 to 4 in 12 innings.
Next game, still in the American League, with an ex Diamond Heel on it is the one between the Baltimore Orioles (5th in the AL East – 7.0 games behind 1st) and the Kansas City Royals (1st (tied) in the AL Central – 2.0 games ahead of 2nd). For the visiting O’s it’s Brian Roberts, who in front of 24,431 fans (64% capacity) at Kauffman Stadium, has a very good game. The ex UNC infielder goes 2 for 3 on the night, scoring three runs in all and getting on board twice more off of walks. Even better for Roberts is the fact that Baltimore (15-20, 4-9 away) took the game, defeating Kansas City (18-17, 11-7 home) by the final of 9 to 5.
And the final game in the Majors, back in the National League, that has a connection to UNC baseball is the one between the Houston Astros (4th in the NL Central – 4.5 games behind 1st) and the Colorado Rockies (3rd in the NL West – 9.5 games behind 1st), played in the mile high city. For the home squad it was supposed to be ex Tar Heel catcher playing, but I guess he had the night off in this one. In the end it was Houston (16-18, 8-8 away) once again coming out victorious, as they defeated Colorado (13-20, 7-10 home) by the final of 5 to 3.
