Heels in the League 05/10/09 (MLB)
The beginning of a new week, maybe not the best time of the seven day span (ugh back to the rat race eh?), but for me at The Fifth Corner it means it’s the beginning of a new cycle of the post I call “Heels in the League” (MLB). Before I begin recapping the games from yesterday with a touch of carolina blue I have to congratulate an ex Diamond Heel who has been moved from Triple A to the Majors. Daniel Bard, a former member of the Pawtucket Sox is now with the home club, the Boston Red Sox. So, from now on, we will be looking at four teams in the MLB here on this daily post. No, without further adiue, let’s get going with the games from 05/10/09…
First game of the day is the one between the New York Yankees (3rd in the AL East – 5.5 games behind 1st) and the Baltimore Orioles (5th in the AL East – 8.0 games behind 1st) in a divisional match up. In a game that was played in front of 33,290 (just over 69% capacity) at Oriole Park in Camden Yards the home squad had their ex Heel playing at second base. Brian Roberts, who was the lead off man in this one, went 1 for 5 with a run scored while striking out twice and leaving three on the base paths. In the end it’s New York (15-16, 9-9 away) getting the win, defeating Baltimore (13-19, 10-10 home) by the final score of 5 to 3.
The other game in the AL East match up that now boasts a touch of carolina blue is the game between the Tampa Bay Rays (4th in the AL East – 6.5 games behind 1st) and the Boston Red Sox (2nd in the AL East – 1.0 games behind 1st), played at historic Fenway Park in front of 37,759 (100% capacity). As I said in the preview, the Sox now have ex UNC pitcher Daniel Bard on their roster. He didn’t play in this one, but (if he was in the park) watched Boston (20-12, 13-4 home) win a tight one, as they defeated Tampa Bay (15-18, 9-11 away) 4 to 3.
The final game in the Big League that has a touch of carolina blue is the one between the visiting Florida Marlins (2nd in the NL East – 1.0 games behind 1st) and the Colorado Rockies (5th in the NL West – 8.5 games behind 1st). In a game where both teams have an ex Diamond Heel on their roster the Marlins’ Andrew Miller is in the minors rehabbing his shoulder and is doing good from what I have read. For the home team, playing in front of 30,197 fans (just below 60% capacity) at Coors Field, it’s catcher Chris Iannetta. While the ex Heel didn’t have a great game, going 1 for 4 and leaving three on the base paths, but at least he knows those didn’t cost him. In the end it was Colorado (12-18, 6-8 home) winning by one, defeating Florida (17-15, 11-8 away) 4 to 3.
