With the knowledge that it’s going to be on time today here comes this edition of “Heels in the League” (MLB). All three teams in the Majors with a touch of carolina blue were in action yesterday, even if one of the ex UNC players is just now beginning his recovery from an injury. In the minors we are now going to head into the Single A, so that all of the MiLB is being covered here on The Fifth Corner. That means from now until the end of their season there are going to be plenty of coverage when it comes to the ex Diamond Heels. So, without further adieu, here is the recap from the 05/05/09 games…

First game in the MLB with a touch of carolina blue is between two teams that are below .500 in the same division, with the Colorado Rockies (5th in NL West – 8.5 back of 1st Place) going up against the San Diego Padres (3rd in the NL West – 7.5 back of 1st Place), played at Petco Park in front of 13,646 (32% capacity). For the visiting team it ex Carolina catcher Chris Iannetta going 1 for 4, with a HR an RBI and a run scored. The ex Heel also struck out in the game. In a game that went into extra innings Iannetta’s homer was the only run scored by the Rockies, and that was just not enough, as San Diego (12-15, 7-5 home) defeated Colorado (10-15, 6-10 away) 2 to 1.

In the next game it’s the Cincinnati Reds (3rd in NL Central – 2.5 back of 1st Place) taking on the Florida Marlins (2nd in NL East – 0.5 back of 1st Place) at Dolphin Stadium in front of 11,087 fans (just below 29% capacity). As we know ex UNC pitcher Andrew Miller has been on DL, but in this article it tells us that he is starting the road back to recovery. As far as the game it was Cincinnati (14-12, 10-5 away) winning this one easily, defeating Florida (15-12, 6-5 home) by the final of 7-0.

The last game in MLB with an ex UNC on a roster is the one between the Baltimore Orioles (5th in AL East – 8.0 back of 1st Place) and the Tampa Bay Rays (4th in AL East – 6.5 back of 1st Place). For the visiting squad, it’s ex UNC Diamond Heel Brian Roberts going 1 for 4, hitting his fourth homer of the season, while getting 2 ribbies and scoring once on the day. Unfortunately it was still Florida (12-16, 6-7 home) winning, taking advanting of home field, as the game was played at Tropicana Field, and beating Baltimore (10-17, 3-9 away) by the final of 6 to 3.
