And with this post I have caught up with the “Heels in the League” (MLB). Now, hopefully I will be able to keep up with the games and make sure it stays a daily post, just like it’s counterpart “Heels in the League” (NBA). As usual, I am going to check the games from MLB and then check the games from Triple A and Double A. Starting with Monday I will add the Single A players that once played in Chapel Hill. The Fifth Corner’s virtual pick maker, Jimmy the Net Sports Geek, chose his first game of the year amongst the games on the schedule today. See if he got it right or not, by going to “Heels in the League” (Predictions) for 04/29/09.
In the first game of the day it’s the game between the Los Angeles Angels (3rd in the AL West ~ 3.0 back of 1st Place) and the Baltimore Orioles (4th in the AL East ~ 5.5 back of 1st Place), played at Oriole Park in Camden Yards in front of 14,203 fans, which is less than 30% of capacity. In a game where both teams are trying to push themselves towards .500, for the home squad it’s Brian Roberts getting the nod at second. The ex Diamond Heel, batting lead off today, goes 1 for 3 with a run scored as well as a walk, while leaving a man on the paths. In the end, in a very close game, Los Angeles (9-11, 3-5 away) wins the game by a run, beating Baltimore (9-13, 7-8 home) by the final of 3 to 2.
The next game of the night is the one the our very own Jimmy the Net Sports Geek picked in his “predictions”. In a battle of the National League East it’s the Florida Marlins (1st in the NL East ~ 1.5 in front of 2nd Place) heading north to face the New York Mets (4th in the NL East ~ 4.0 back of 1st Place) at the newly built City Field in front of 39,339 fans, which is about 94% of capacity. As we know ex UNC pitcher Andrew Miller is still out for the Marlins, but he can console himself as Florida (13-8, 8-4 away) came from behind to beat New York (9-12, 6-6 home) by one, with the final tally being 4 to 3.
Last game with a touch of carolina blue in the Majors is a match up between division foes. It’s San Diego Padres (2nd in the NL West ~ 2.5 back of 1st Place) and the Colorado Rockies (5th in the NL West ~ 5.0 back of 1st Place). In the game, which was played at Coors Field in front of 20,289 fans, about 40% of capacity, it’s ex UNC Chris Iannetta once again behind the plate. The ex Diamond Heel goes 2 for 4, including a home run, plus he delivered three RBIs and 2 runs scored. The only blemish for Iannetta is that he struck out once on the night. Thanks in part to the ex Heel, Colorado (8-12, 4-5 home) won the game, beating San Diego (11-10, 5-6 away) by the final of 7 to 5.
