This weekend the new women’s soccer league, the WPS (Women Professional Soccer), began its journey with the inagural game, Los Angeles Sol vs. Washington Freedom, with the west coast squad winning the game by the final of 2-0. But what does this have to do with a North Carolina blog you are going to ask? Well, as I do with the ex Carolina players now in the NBA, I will also do the same with the ex UNC players in the WPS. In this game, that was played in front of 14,832 people there were three ex pupil of Anson Dorrance.
For the home team, it was Kendall Fletcher, a defender out of Apex, N.C. was one of the starters for the Sol. While for the visiting Freedom team it was CatWhitehill (D out of Birmingham, Al.) starting on the back line for the Freedom and Allie Long (M out of Northport, N.Y.) playing in the middle of the lineup. The game was pretty good, and if this is a preview of what is in store for this league, it should be a bright future for the WPS. A small recap of the game can be found on the WPS web site, in the end the first victory for this league went to the Sol, and while none of the ex Tar Heels didn’t record a goal or assist, it is nice to see three players from Chapel Hill being part of this. I have to say, for someone like me, that does enjoy soccer, seeing newspapers such as the NY Times does an article about the game made me feel good.
“Heels in the League” for the WPS won’t be a daily post since not everyday the league has games, but be sure that when there are ex Tar Heels in action I will be doing a recap about it the next day. The same goes for the MLS, which I am a bit behind on that, but will be catching up on it today/tomorrow. For more about this game here is a few more links:
