The Associated Press came out with its pre-season Top 25, and in it are the Tar Heels, one of five teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference. Joining UNC are 10th ranked Virginia Tech (Coastal), 13th ranked Miami (Coastal), 16th ranked Georgia Tech (Coastal) and 20th ranked FSU (Atlantic). For anyone that keeps tabs on things like this, Carolina will be playing each of those four teams, add LSU at number 21, and you can see what type of schedule the Heels are facing this season, as well as how packed the Coastal Division is with talent. Of course with the NCAA investigation still on-going, with the huge question mark that is the Carolina offense and with a defense that could be the best in the nation this season is getting closer and closer (less than 2 weeks away from kick-off) all is still up in the air for head coach Butch Davis.
Maybe because of the uncertainty, maybe because of the hype of the quality of players/team, maybe a mix of those two things with a dash of this and that and you can see how exciting it is becoming waiting for the year to begin. Sure, with two Top 25 teams right off the bat, this season could go south quickly, but on the other hand it seems that even with Las Vegas not knowing if the two seniors will play for UNC the odds makers are still putting the team from Chapel Hill as the favorite against LSU, with the spread being anywhere from 1 to 2.5 points (I didn’t do a whole search for this, so there might be other lines out there). Of course betting lines should not be a measuring stick for the game, and by no means did I put this into my post for people to think about betting on the game.
Time will tell how good (or not so good) this season will be for North Carolina, and the only good thing is that the time to find out is getting shorter and shorter.
