Well, it’s over, top ranked recruit Harrison Barnes has made his choice, and for all of us that love North Carolina, his choice is the best one! Yes, even with most of the so-called experts thinking that Barnes was signed, sealed and delivered to Duke, the reality is that once again head coach Roy Williams showed the whole nation what kind of recruiter he is. And I do not care how the “other” school down the road twists and turns this one, this is a major set back for them. And it’s another head to head recruiting war that Duke loses to UNC, which can not help when recruiting other players. The young man began his presser by saying:
“The school that I chose to be my alma mater—indeed the place where I will leave my legacy—had the right balance of academics and basketball which I thought I could achieve the goals that I wanted to pursue,”
And then used a computer generated screen to get in touch with the school he had decided to go to, which is the University of North Carolina. Coach Williams was at work with his team when the call came in and the whole squad got to be part of Barnes’ decision, making all of this even better for UNC and its fan base. With the guard/forward combo going to Chapel Hill gives UNC once again the top recruiting class of 2010. The young man from Ames, Iowa was part of the celebration to kick off the 100th year of basketball at Carolina, seeing players like Michael Jordan and ex head coach Dean Smith. If things work out as they should maybe one day there will be another recruiting coming to the Dean Dome and seeing Barnes at such an event, this time playing and not watching it.
Here is the press conference from this afternoon:
