A while back I wrote about Florida International and their unwillingness to play against North Carolina in the Coaches vs Cancer Tournament (on November 9, 2009) in Chapel Hill. Now it seems that someone at the college from the sunshine state has decided to be a bit smarter that the rest and play the game in the Dean Dome. As we all know FIU wanted to play Ohio State instead of Carolina in the tournament, and I am still wondering why, but that is another post for another time. The post for today is about the fact that Isiah Thomas will coach his first game against the team that he played his last game against, and more importantly, a tournament that helps the fight against such an evil disease is going to go on as schedule and not have anything ruin it.
And while there is also the money side, as there is in anything having to do with college sports, I do not want to think about that, because to me the purpose of this tournament is about fighting cancer. Yes, I know it is very naive, but because of the connections I have with this ugly disease I want to hope that maybe, just maybe, people are thinking of that more than how much money they won’t get because they backed out of the tourney. Coach Thomas said things like this about the tournament:
“We’re proud to be invited,”
And of having the chance to help raise money for cancer research:
“the greater good.”
True or not? I do not care right now (nor should you), I am just very proud that UNC is in the tournament and that there will be no headlines about a team backing out anymore and the focus will be about filling up the venues for this and getting the most money for the fight vs cancer. Because in the end, that would be the ultimate win for all teams involved, wouldn’t it?
