I believe that Ed Davis is about a year to a year and a half away from being NBA ready as far as his offensive game is concerned. He needs some post moves and a way to learn how to have a mid-range game. Defensively I think that the forward can produce for anyone in the Pro’s right now. This mix, good defense and not a total liability on offense, is right for a player coming off the bench, not for someone who is going to have to pick up the bulk of 36 minutes, 24 points and close to 11 rebounds. Maybe half the minutes, half the boards and a third of the scoring would be good, again if Davis was coming off the bench. All of this, added to a lot of doubters about the young man’s game, and this is a lot for anyone to absorb in their first season in the NBA.
Now, do not take this as me saying Ed Davis is not going to make it at the next level, cause it is not what I am saying. What I am saying and am worried about, is that this spot, with the Raptors, might place Ed in a situation that is not the best for either parties. Time will tell if I am right to worry or not and as usual, as I do with all the Tar Heels let me wish Ed Davis the best of luck as he starts his next chapter of his life.
Here is a video with Ed Davis talking to the media after being drafted by the Toronto Raptors…
