So I thought that the North Carolina basketball season was over. Silly me, forgetting the line made famous by a James Bond movie “Never Say Never”. The only thing that might be over are the careers at Chapel Hill for the Wears twins as a report from California is coming out that the two young men are headed back to the West Coast to stay. Source of this report: their dad! Looking around the tweets most of the players at UNC are shocked by what happened, meaning to me that this was a hush-hush thing for the two brothers from Cali. The fact that head coach Roy Williams was on vacation also makes me wonder that all of this was something that was planned out without involving anyone (or the least amount of people possible). And while details are still sketchy on all of this, you have to wonder if home sickness or sickness of lack of minutes had a big part in all of this. The twins played for the famed Mater Dei High, were part of the McDonald’s AA team, but both got about 10 minutes per game this year and some people didn’t think that would have gone up much even with Ed Davis heading to the NBA.
What bothers me the most is, if all of this is true, the way they did it. Cause, realistically, they have to know that this will put North Carolina, the team they choose to rappresent, behind the 8 ball when it comes to seeing if they can pick up someone for this upcoming season. They wanted to leave, no problem, but they could have done it in a way that does not hurt the team/season/program as much as it could by doing it this way. I also do not buy the “locker room problems” theory as a reason why they are leaving. You are going to have problems anywhere you go, deal with them, it’s part of becoming mentally strong. Leaving when there are obstacles is never going to help anyone. To all of this there might be bright spots, like coach Williams having scholarships for other bigs to come to Chapel Hill in `11 and `12, it might thin out the rotation, giving more playing time to all, letting them gel more and more. Sure, foul trouble could be an issue, but that is something that the team is going to have to work on during the summer. The fact that now you have mostly players that like to run up and down the court could negate the beefy big men the Heels could see.
Overall, while it kind of stinks how this played out, I am sure that the team and the program aren’t taking a huge hit. Sure the fan boards are going nuts, the fans are looking for ledges, but this team has talent (both in house and coming in), and if they can get back to running up and down the floor they will be just fine in the upcoming year. As a Heel, and because I am true to what the “Carolina Way/Family” means, I wish both of these young men the best of luck.

They surely could have let us know a lot sooner than they did. They waited until the last day of friggin exams.
