If you like suspense you are going to love how the Diamond Heels began their 2010 season, as they kept having to come back on George Washington. Eleventh ranked North Carolina (1-0) took the only lead of the game against George Washington (0-1) in the bottom of the tenth to win their opener at Boshamer Stadium by the final of 6 to 5. An interesting statistic I found on the official web site of UNC Athletics is that all but one of the runs scored by Carolina came with two outs, and while that has to be very exciting for the 1,193 fans that were at the game I doubt that head coach Mike Fox wants to go through that during the season. UNC improves to 10-0 in season openers at home under coach Fox and 12-0 on opening day.

On the mound it was junior Matt Harvey (3 runs (all earned) on 5 hits and 2 BBs while striking out three) who started the game, his 30th start as a Tar Heel, going 5.2 innings, while freshman Michael Morin (1 run (earned) on one hit and a walk while having 2 K’s) got the win (1-0) while throwing just one inning. In between these two it was another frosh, Chris Munnelly, who went for 3.1 innings (1 run (earned) on 1 hit and 2 BBs while having a pair of K’s). On offense it was sophomore Levi Michael and RS senior Micheal Cavasini led the Heels with 2 hits a piece, while batters 3 through 5 (Michael, Jesse Wierzbicki and Brian Goodwin) had four of the five RBIs for Carolina. UNC finished the game with two errors, and while I am not a big fan of that stat, in a tight game like this one that could have been the difference between a win and a loss.

GWU and UNC will continue the three game series Saturday at 2 p.m. EST and finish up Sunday at 1 p.m., so make sure to come back to The Fifth Corner for a small recap of the games. Baseball season is here and the Diamond Heels begin with a W!
