Diamond Heels come from behind once again

Boshamer StadiumSecond game of the baseball season and 11th ranked North Carolina (2-0) took the “come from behind” route to get its second win over George Washington (0-2) and of the season. This time the Heels went into the bottom of the seventh trailing one nothing, they finished that season leading 4 to 1, with the final score being 4 to 2 for the Tar Heels. If head coach Mike Fox has many more of these types of games he might just turn white or have no more from ripping them out of his head. For the seven innings the Colonials held the lead, scoring its only run on a single and double against Heels’ starting pitcher junior righty Patrick Johnson (1-0), who went seven innings, giving up five hits and one walk while striking out seven in all, and got the win in the end.

Coach Fox also used sophomore Jimmy Messer (0.2 IP – one run on 1 hit and no walks while striking out 2) and freshman Michael Morin (1.1 IP – no runs on 1 hit and 2 K’s), who got the save for UNC. In all the Heels had eight hits, with junior catcher Jesse Wierzbicki, senior short stop Ryan Graepel and junior 1st Baseman Dillon Hazlett all having two hits a piece. While RS Senior Mike Cavasini had two RBIs in the game, including the game winning one in the seventh. Before that UNC had stranded players in scoring position a couple of times, including a pair in the bottom of the second. Overall it must have been a pretty good game for the 1,254 fans in attendance who witnessed the second win in a row for the Diamond Heels this season.

The Colonials and the Tar Heels finish up their three game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. EST at Boshamer Stadium, where UNC will go for the sweep and a 3-0 start to the season.
