After two come from behind wins against the Colonials this one the Diamond Heels didn’t give their head coach Mike Fox any more gray hair, as 11th ranked North Carolina (3-0) defeated George Washington (0-3) by the final of 6-3 in front of 1,205 fans at Boshamer Stadium. (Check out the pictures of the newly building facility here). On the mound it was the first ever start for junior Colin Bates (1-0), who gave seven very good innings for his team, giving up just three runs on six hits and no walks while striking out five. The rest was up to sophomore Jimmy Messer, who pitched two innings, giving up just one walk and earning the save. Except for the fourth inning, when the Colonials got three runs (to bring the score to 4-3 for the Tar Heels), this game was never really in any danger of being lost by Carolina.
On offense it was junior left fielder Ben Bunting (3 hits (3 for 3) as the lead off man), frosh 2nd baseman Tommy Coyle (2 hits) and JUCO transfer Dillon Hazlett (2 hits) to lead the way, getting 7 of the 11 Tar Heels hits. While the RBIs came from freshman fight fielder Brian Goowin (2) and four other UNC players with one a piece. Once again showing me that this team seems it’s going to have to win by using the team effort, since no one is going to do it by themselves. Two things to note, senior Mike Cavasini has hit in nine consecutive games (dating back to last season), while Junior Dillon Hazlett is leading the team with a .444 batting average.
The Diamond Heels were off today, but will be right back in action tomorrow at Boshamer Stadium as they take on UNC Greensboro at 3:00 p.m. EST, in what is just a one game series between the two in-state squads.
