Davis is staying, so he says

edavis032809It seems that freshman power forward Ed Davis will be back to Chapel Hill next year, at least that is what this small online post from the Observation from Above the Rim seems to say. I am totally against asking things like this to players while they are still in the tournament, because their only thoughts should be on the game ahead of them and nothing more. Just like I think no one should ask head coach of what their thoughts/intentions could be about a job opening. Let them live the moment, and concentrate on what they are there for. But, in this world of “all the news that is needed as soon as possible” you know that isn’t going to happen.

So, when Davis is asked if he will consider a jump to the NBA the freshman’s answer was quick and to the point: “no”. Anyone else have any questions on that subject? I doubt it, and I love how a young man can easily shut down the discussion (at least for now). But we have to remember, Ed Davis’ father was also a college player and then went to the NBA for a decade. That to me means that Terry Davis has told his son what is going to happen and when, in other words this young man might still be a freshman as far as the college and his age is concerned, but in basketball IQ is way beyond his years.

If I had to give my personal opinion on the matter I would say that while Ed Davis might be drafted this year in the NBA as a very good prospect, another season (or two) at the college level is going to make him a great player. Many posters on UNC web boards have compared him to several Tar Heel greats. Playing under a head coach like Roy Williams will give Davis a chance to not only being compared to these players but maybe surpass them.
