Today the women’s soccer team once again plays a Top 25 opponent. This time it’s going to be Texas A&M, who is ranked 13th in the nation and was defeated twice by North Carolina in 2008. But for Anson Dorrance’s club, who has been the top ranked team in the nation since the preseason, playing the top programs and beating them is something that is not an exception to the rule, it’s the norm. As of right now the Carolina seniors are the winningest class, with a record of 76-6-3, and this year having beaten already the second best team in that time period, Notre Dame. This is what you have to think when you think women’s soccer at Chapel Hill.
You can check out how the Lady Heels are doing this by going to see their stats. And you can also see how many of the players on this team are receiving weekely awards because of their game in, game out performances on the pitch. As this team sets itself to take on their next opponent people can say many things about the squad, but they can not say it’s a fluke that they are ranked top in the nation. A place, with the way coach Dorrance has work endlessly on the field and off, will not be giving up for due the talent that UNC has now as well as the one that is coming in on a yearly basis.
Carolina has shut out its opponents 12 of the last 15 games, and since falling to Notre Dame last year they are now undefeated in the past 29 games (27 wins and 2 ties), including defeating the Fighting Irish in the NCAA finals last year and trouncing them last weekend by the score of 6-0. This is the power that you have at Chapel Hill when you speak of soccer. However, from what I have read of this match up, it seems that the game of late is always decided by just a one goal differential. We shall see if today that happens once again or if UNC can score like it has of late.
But not all agree with my sentiments, as the undefeated Heels (5-0) are ranked #1 in the NSCAA coaches poll, Soccer America and Soccer Times national polls, yet are only second in the Top Drawer Soccer poll. Hopefully another win against a ranked team will change that as well. The game is at Fetzer Field, start time 2:00 p.m. EST, and as usual the admission is free. If you can not make it to the game you can go to the official web site of Carolina sports, TarHeelBlue.com and follow it via Gametracker.
