Basketball recruit Harrison Barnes, who has been a top priority for both North Carolina and Duke, will announce his college decision Friday on from his high school at 4:00 p.m.. The World Leader in Sports will have televise the press conference from ESPNU. Barnes, a 6’6″/205 lbs guard/forward combo, did not have just the Tar Heels and the Blue Devils after him, Iowa St., Kansas, Oklahoma and UCLA are also awaiting to hear what the young man from Ames, Iowa is going to do. But if you have followed this story it seemed that the two teams from the east coast are the ones in the lead for his services.

Harrison Barnes is amongst the top players whatever recruiting site you check out, but more than that, it seems that he has also become a sort of tug of war between the UNC and Duke, with a lot of the experts/analysts thinking that the winner of this war might have the next step up for another national championship! With both the Tar Heels and the Blue Devils already having a Top 10 player from next season’s class, who does get young man from Iowa will probably have the best class for 2010. And on the other hand, all the other players in the Top 10 do not have either team listed as a top choice, which means that Barnes might be the last chance for either HC Roy Williams of Coach K to get a top player for next year.

When I talked to someone inside the UNC Athletic circle he could not say which way the young man was pointing but said the following: “I do know one thing for sure: there’s absolutely nothing else Carolina could’ve done in this recruitment to get Barnes. If he goes elsewhere, he just felt a stronger pull there. And sometimes that happens.” And that to me is good enough to believe that if Barnes isn’t a Heel it’s because he didn’t want to be one.
