Late last night I was on Twitter, which has become my number one hangout for all news (or better said, all sports) all the time, when someone (do not remember who) told me of an article on Buster Sports written by sports writer, editor-in-chief at the web site and twitterer @willbrinson (Will Brinson) that talked about the fact that if he had to make a decision today, sophomore point guard Larry Drew II would transfer out of Carolina. The story is based on the words of reliable sources, make sure you see the “s” at the end, meaning that more than one is telling this to Buster Sports. I will say this about the story before reading the content: I am one of those people that until “unnameable sources” are replaced by “hard facts” I do not believe much, on the other hand, after a season like this one can anyone really say that anything is out of the question?
After reading all of the story I have to say that “sources”, “if it was today” and many other comments made me think of this story as a way of putting something out there just to get to something else. But before I go to that thought let me just say that if Larry Drew, or any other athlete on any team at any university, makes his choice of staying or going based on the fact that his girlfriend is going to be attending one school or another, they should think long and hard about priorities. And I say this because these source tell Buster Sports that if Drew’s girlfriend, who is scheduled to enroll in Chapel Hill, can be convinced to stay on the West Coast it would make the point guard’s decision a lot easier.
In my opinion if this is a true story LD should be seeing a lot less time from here until the end of the season, especially now that the story has “broken”. If not, I have to say that this is a bit more about being a rumor and a bit less about sources telling this and that.
But let me get back to my first point, the fact that to me this felt like it was to get at something else. In the first paragraph of the article the last sentence was: “that Roy Williams lost this team some time ago”. Was this said by the same sources? Or was it the fact that it was a free cheap shot at a Hall of Fame coach? It’s funny that the article begins talking about rumors of this and that, but then has multiple sources ready to tell everything about Larry Drew II. And while I am not saying if this is true or not, what I am saying, or almost demanding, is this: why didn’t Buster Sports go after all the other rumors that are out there and that the online article itself talks about?
This site is not the first and won’t be the last to have these sort of stories for the season. This is what happens when expectations are not met, when things do not go the way most everyone thought they would. On the other hand, this to me is a rumor, plain and simple, and just like many others, it could be true or not, but my common sense says it’s hard to believe that you have “multiple sources” and all you can talk about is Larry Drew and no one else. Of course all of this would make sense if the sources had nothing to do with Carolina basketball, and were just close to the player, but if that is the case then my thoughts on the “free cheap shots” would be pretty accurate, since if you are just going to talk about a player with people outside the program the team/coaches should not be touched, or worst yet, should not be blasted.
I will end with this, whether the story is true or not, did putting it out there help anyone? Does it help LD with his final games? No. Does it help the team gel a bit? No. Does it help the web site that wrote this get any more respect? Not for me, because while this story could be true, the cheap shots were not needed and that just ruins it for me. And if the story turns out to be false in the end (meaning it might have been accurate but LD has changed his mind), then this story just gives another bash to blogs around the world, that have been long said to pull the trigger on anything just to get something out there.
